job interview questions

07/11/2007 2:10 PM

Hello. I'm preparing for the interviews for Civil Engineering jobs (public). I've been gathering questions and answers online, but I can't answer the following questions clearly. In my previous interview I was asked the similar questions as No. 1, 3, and 4. Please someone help me with these questions!!

1. If you were taking a phone complaint from a citizen who demands a stop sign at an intersection and your supervisor was unavailable, how would you handle the situation?

2. You are asked to organize and present data from an air quality study. How would you go about it?

3. During construction, the contractor was digging a trench and found something large and unusual. He calls you and asks what he should do. How would you handle this situation?

4. You have designed an intersection based on data from past years. What is the most important thing you must do before submitting it for final approval?

How would you answer those questions? Take a shot at them first and then we'll see where we are.

Yes, you have a good point. My apologies. I'll take a shot.

1. If you were taking a phone complaint from a citizen who demands a stop sign at an intersection and your supervisor was unavailable, how would you handle the situation?

I can't just make a decision of putting a stop sign based on one citizen, so I would tell him/her that I will call him/her back once I get in touch with my supervisor.

2. You are asked to organize and present data from an air quality study. How would you go about it?

I would analyze the air quality study data and make tables or graphs appropriately.

3. During construction, the contractor was digging a trench and found something large and unusual. He calls you and asks what he should do. How would you handle this situation?

I would...ask him to stop digging until we find out what it is. (But who is supposed to investigate? or How?)

4. You have designed an intersection based on data from past years. What is the most important thing you must do before submitting it for final approval?

That you make sure the data from past years are not too far off from the current data.

Reasonable answers!

For #1.ask yourself..If I was the guy complaining about the stop sign what would I want to hear?

Maybe...I'll make a note of your name and your request and I'll get back with a formal response when I've spoken to my supervisor, reviewed the file/ data etc..or some such. People want to feel that they are being taken seriously. Indeed the call should be noted.

#2..Fine answer....maybe find data from comparable environments for comparison.

#3...spot on....but who...police? Bomb disposal?...depends what it looks like?

#4 Again reasonable..but wouldn't you have checked this first? I sometimes wonder if the people who design these things have ever actually gone and looked at them (especially in the rush hour)...data is fine..but go look at it !

Hope this helps or at least makes you think a bit!

Del

Del,

I agree with #4. It's a waste of time if you realize the data is too off and have to redesign the whole system.

Thank you for your response! I feel better about going to the next interview.

You answer to #1 would upset the caller, they would think they weren't talking to the right person in the first place.

May i suggest and answer that says your the Da MAN. Such as "Thank you for the call, but I need more information before we can put a sign up, such as has there been any acadents at the site? What is the speed limit in the area? And how will a stop sign help?"

There are no "wrong" or "right" answers. What the interviewer is seeking to determine is this individual's approach to tackling these issues. The interviewer will make a balanced assessment of the answers across all the candidates with a view to selecting the "best" candidate (according to their criteria) for the role from those available. One's approach holds more weight than one's experience sometimes!

When interviewing for a job, remember that it is the firm that has the problem, not the individual. Actually, the firm has such a big problem that the only way they are going to be able to solve it is to hire someone. When one walks in, all they have is what has been sent to them. Something in the application tells them that you might have what they need to solve their problem, otherwise you wouldn't be at the interview! Find out what the problem is and sell them the solution!

And if that particular application is unsuccessful, remember there is one less candidate to compete with when applying for the next one!

Guest ,

The questions asked by interviewer don`t mean exact answers that can be calculated and seen in answer books , these questions are basic and social knowledge based that to are important , if you are a new kid on the field you will have difficulty , answer them confidently and counter ask in an approach that won`t annoy your future boss like what how you were tackling such situation before and what are conditions now , being new they will respect your questions or doubts ,if you are a experianced one than these questions are just formal , most interviewers see the right candidate for certain task and put questions they want to tackle and expect that answer , confident from you
