Liquid

07/10/2007 11:21 AM

Liquid always level it self. On these principles the Liquid is still used in most of the carpenter's levellers.

Now my question is this, if we think ocean is a GIANT bucket of water container. Than do you ever notice while standing on beaches that ocean liner or ship first you see its antenna than slowly its whole figure appears as it comes closer to you. The ship appears it is rising out water.

So why can't you see whole ship at once since water is (as Liquid) always stay in level.

I was told earth is round that's why fist you see the tip of the ship then slowly the whole ship comes into site.

However I do agree the earth is around and it is solid mass and it curves but water is liquid should stay in level. WHY liquid curves if does then how much per mile. If does than the Laser are far better Leveller Then liquid filled levellers.

Are you serious?

Liquid doesn't stay 'level' except on a small scale...

On an ocean it will be a curve. If the world was all water it would still be a sphere it wouldn't be flat.

You also have to think what mean by level... 90 degrees relative to the foce of gravity?

Because an object is "Level" when it's horizontal axis is tangent to an imaginary perpendicular line that intersects the center of the object and the center of the reference. On earth, this reference is the planetary center (also center of gravity), which every point is relative to. Hence, "Level" is always relatively tangent to a perpendicular line to the center of earth, even at every point that is subjected to this gravity field over the entire (spherical) area that is affected.

Even when flying above the earth, we have "up", "down", and "Level", because we are still in this spherical area of influence.

However, out in space and away from the planet some distance, there is no up and down. The only relationship to "level" is visual alignment relative to our accepted notion that "up" is north, as we perceive through visual clues of planetary objects that we see.

Hope this clears this up for you.

Here's why your questions are dysfunctional, in my humble opinion.

1) Consider the statement: "Water seeks it's own level". This statement does not infer water "finds" it. On a macro scale, we assume a water "level" to be quasi-accurate for what we define for the purpose. No one should assume water is anything other than molecular energy in a liquid state. It is constantly in motion, even if we cannot see it without microscope or other energy measurement techniques. Detailed perspective and scale are required to denote meaningful parameters. Your statements provide or suggest to supply neither, in sufficient quantity to be of value.

2) The Ocean is not a bucket of water in a container. It is a molecular state of oxygen and hydrogen combined; forced to the earth by atmospheric pressure, gravity and vortesia. Yes it may appear or be considered contained, but only if your macro view is from the vacuum of space.

3) The Convex of the horizon is generally considered to be 17 miles to the "brink" of the horizon. This is a vague reference, not a constant.

4) The earth is not round.

5) Laser is focused waves of specific spectrum of light, not "leveller". Gravity forces wave lengths to become smaller or one may assert to "quiver". Gravity has not been proven to remove oscillations or create a level line of exact uniformity within a spectrum of light.

Strange how your very basic assumptions lead directly to work being funded to seek gravity waves.

According to Nick, at:

http://www.physorg.com/news83588385.html

For all we know the massenergy density for matter is infinite but not light"s. And that might make a difference.

An accurate spirit or builders level or a plumb line do not always show the correct horizontal / vertical.

When used next to a mountain the reading would be wrong.

In the late 1600's or early 1700's a surveyor started setting out a baseline starting from Cape Town (South Africa) next to table mountain, with the intention of going due north.

After some time he concluded that the curvature of the earth in the southern hemisphere differs from that in the northern hemisphere.

It was discovered almost a 100 years later that the 'level' was affected by the mountain and that the original assumption were incorrect.

The mountain is surrounded by the ocean and the Cape flats - very close to sea level.

For building purposes the incorrect horizontal plain must be used.

A laser level also works on the direction of the gravitational pull . and therefore are very similar to the working of a spirit level.

A laser cannot be uses over long distances.

I once read somewhere that the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of Panama was some 20 inches higher than the east coast due to the rotation of the earth. Good job this level stuff works on a micro scale.

I thought the liquid in a carpenter's level only a medium for the air bubble. Which is indicating level by floating to the top and center of the tube. Just as the Gravitation pull on the two dissimilar materials forces the liquid to the bottom and the air to the top. It holds our oceans to the curvature of our earth. Not flat

Your level will only indicate perpendicular to the localized gravity, which for construction is exactly what you want. Although visually it may not be exactly level, a building will always want to go towards the force of gravity. If you build a building that looks level and the force of gravity is at an angle, the building will eventually fall down.

Gravity is stronger near large masses such as mountains.

See the gravity map http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap030723.html

Geez man...are you for real? Were you born on this planet, and just missed grade school (1st-12th), or what? I can't believe you don't understand the spacial points involved. You said it yourself, this planet is ROUND. It is! When you put your eye against a basketball, do you see the whole basketball? No!!! You see one curved plane that wraps around out of your view. Astronomers call it the 'limb'! Guess what,? Think of this planet on the same point, only much, much larger. The oceans ARE flat. Gravity itself holds all that water at the same level, and other than tugs from the gravitational pull of the moon, it stays level. But because it is a curved plane, the water also curves. Understand?
