The one with which the user is able to get the best results for the application, obviously!

  • One solution for evaluating the best is an opinion poll. Reply to the original post with all the various CAD software options, one to each reply, and let CR4 users apply the GA mechanism to see which one gets the most votes. However, the outcome is likely to be statistically insignificant.

There isn't a best.

It depends on what your requirements are.

  • Functionality
  • Costs
  • User Friendly
  • Capabilities
  • Client Requirements
  • ect ....

Just to name a few.

What are you looking for and you background.

**********

Interesting, I just looked on the web site you listing..... particularly the portfolio.... which is a wide range.....

The question I have is, is that really your company's Portfolio?

.... or is that what was (or even partially) pulled off the web and your company is calling it their own?

Re: CAD Design Software

A very good place to start. I have run across, many times, where the "designers say that it would take them at least 12 hours to design something on the tube. Well, if you know what you are doing with the instruments you picture,, guess what,, the good old drawing board may be a better option for simpler designs.

I did up 10 different designs that would have taken up to 12 hours each on the tube(according to the CAD designers), in a matter of about 10 hours,, on the drawing board. Sure my dimensioning and lettering leaves something to be desired, but it is legible.

For more complicated projects, CAD may be better, but remember, CAD was not always around and we designed some pretty complicated stuff. CAD would likely be a faster alternate for more complicated designs.

Then there's free hand sketches.

Sketch it up, dimension it, tear it out of your notebook and hand to the person doing the work. That work could be either making the thing or having it drawn up "properly" by a CADsmith.

I've used chalk on the floor and wall too.....single use drawings. Sometimes a permanent marker if it has to last longer.

For single use, manual is way faster than CAD. The information just needs to be there, the lines don't have to be dead straight but if they do then hand drafting instruments are the go.

Been there, done that as well. Get the ideas down while they are fresh in your mind.

CAD= Computer aided.. The computer aids in keeping the paper from blowing away. In the old days we called it a paper weight. -- JHF

P.S. Some even have a power coffee cup holder that opens at the push of a button!

The human imagination beats any CAD software (the export functionality is limited however).

For CAD however, what's the application?

Does cost come in to it when deciding what is best?

What about ease of use?

What about library support?

What about file export compatibility?

What about application?

2D or 3D rendering?

Simulation functionality?

Hardware requirements (again coming back to cost)

etc, etc, etc.

CAD software is used for 2D and 3D designing, drawing and drafting purpose. But the price of CAD software must be affordable so that a user can avail and get the benefit.

A CAD software powerful yet lightweight and fast so that it can ease up the work. A library is needed with specific blocks that can help to finish the drawing more quickly and conveniently.

ActCAD is a lightweight and powerful CAD software with an ActCAD block library which includes 5000+ blocks of mechanical, electrical, civil domains. It supports DWG to PDF conversion by exporting the file for conversion to the required format. Read more

Asia Infotech is a leading CAD engineering services provider company in India provides CAD drafting and design services in architectural, mechanical, civil and structural engineering.

If your company is so 'leading' then you would be using the best.

That certainly doesn't speak very highly of their CAD design services if they don't even know what kind of software to use.

Looks like the board and T square may just be their best tool.

This just sounds like a form of advertising to me, asking a question while displaying a service rather than directly promoting the service, possibly following up when enough 'fish' have been caught up in the thread 'net' with a sales pitch.

A number of people have tried it on this forum before, about as effective as spam marketing and not worth any more of our time.

'Cheesy Animation' however takes it up to a whole new level of bad publicity marketing backlash.

That certainly doesn't speak very highly of their marketing department, then.
Their "testimonials" seem very weak, too.

Parth123 looks quiet new. He did not even bother or manage to make the link work.

Pretty weak for a sales attempt.

By my count two new user accounts and one anonymous user (now gone it appears along with another thread where I outed Mr cheesy) all turned up shortly after each other all talking and posting in a similar language style and discussing the same link. That just smacks of same person/multiple accounts posting.

And he's doing it again on this thread (now calling himself Parth123)- same company, just different link address promoting the same site. The CAD spammer is being spammed by another CAD spammer!

Not only the best, but also a number of licenses of different cad systems as well as a number seats.

I have a feeling the company is nothing but a company of amateurs. :/

Jay,
You should team up with that cheesy animation bunch.
You're playing to a tough audience here. Good luck.

It's the one that you can ask someone else to use....then all you need is a red pen and the ability to draw nice clouds to redline the prints until it's all good.

Depends what you want to do and how much money you have to play with There are good engineering packages ,good shoe design good jewelry good furniture good car design Really good building design and excellent component design Softwares so your question is really like how long is a piece of string. I have used cad for 20 years now, so I know just a small amount, but I started with an education, a drawing set and LOTS of books

I'm currently looking at Rhino 5 3D http://www.rhino3d.com/download/ there is a 90 day trial available. I would welcome feedback from any users. Full package ~ $2000 in Australia, lots of "how to" videos around.

Again architects use different software to engineers.

Rhino is good but try to make sure you get the one with the T-Splines embedded in it otherwise it is quite clunky, and the interface is ok, though quirky I know a few guys use it for mould and plastic product designs they like it a lot. I am mostly Solidworks with a bit of Maya But I have tried Rhino in the past.

Thank you Merc600sec

I don't do much die design, I'm currently on Win 7 and use an elderly Solid Edge which was designed for XP Pro, it's not very good at splines and falls over quite often.

It has some nice features such as part assembly, checking interference, sheet metal development, second moments, solving 4 bar linkages, can Rhino do those things or is it more about solid modelling.

Re: CAD Design Software

Althow the reason for the thread is a bit inhonest I'm still going to drop my knowledge here.

It depends.

To start you need to analyse the needs.

Do you want to generate nice printed 2D drawings or do you require to integrate the mould design, toolshop and measurement room, preferably through SAP?

The next important issue is the knowledge: a bad design suite used by a well trained and educated operator will provide better results than a top of class package operated by a simple line drawer who needs a calculator for 1+2.
