What Happens if Earth Stops Rotating?

04/12/2015 10:47 AM

Some time back, in this Forum, there was a posting and it is "WHAT HAPPENS IF EARTH STOPS IT'S SELF ROTATION.? "

There were lot of replies/clarifications. I have also posted a reply. To-day, incidentally came across a web-link and a video from You-Tube starts playing, which describes or answers the question. There are few related topics and video display

The link is having a heading " Earth SPINNING if STOPPED"

"WHAT HAPPENS IF EARTH STOPS IT'S SELF ROTATION.? "

It's hard to say since we are assuming something impossible. We can all believe in the Conservation of Angular Momentum, so if the Earth stopped spinning, the angular momentum would have to go somewhere.

The earth is slowing down due to tidal friction caused by the gravity of the moon and sun. The angular momentum is primarily being transferred to the moon, raising the moon's orbit, and secondarily transferred to the earth's orbital angular momentum, raising the earth's orbit. So the moon's orbital period and the earth's orbital period increase (very, very slightly) as the earth's rotation slows.

So not only are the days getting longer, the YEARS are getting longer too? Oh poopie, and I thought the workday was dragging BEFORE....

When concerns about 'what if's' hits this level it's probably time to go and visit a psychologist for some in depth discussions and meds.

The earth could also blow up into a highly oblate (almost disk-like) spheroid.

Cows have trouble getting back up.

Elephants do not have this problem.

Elephants can trot faster than a human can sprint.

Elephants can easily lift 200-300 pounds with their trunk.

Elephants can toss a 200-300 pound 'log' several feet in the air.

Elephants can sit down on objects, they have been known to crush the front ends of small cars while attempting to sit on them.

Elephants have been shown to have good memories, have been known to hold grudges, and have shown patience in WHEN to act on a grudge.

Tornado, could you explain to me why any sane, sober, non-suicidal person would even CONSIDER trying to tip an elephant?

Aww, she's just enjoying a day at the beach, after all it's hot out.

(Yes, all that is true from the photo. the pink belly, instead of the usual pale gray, means she's 'flushed'/'blushing,' the skin capillaries expanding to help try and dump heat. And the angle of the photo leaves no mystery about it being a boy or girl.)

Damn, I forgot to slip on my Tin Foil helmet before reading the OPs post.

Why worry? By the time the Earth stops spinning we'll be long dead, forgotten, and piles of dust...

Re: What Happens if Earth Stops Rotating?

Thank you kind sir, for igniting our humor once again.

Top ten things to do when/if earth stops rotating on its axis:

(10) Calculate out where it all stops (eventually), and set up base camp a ways past that to the west.

(9) Get busy finishing off your reading list.

(8) Build a DIY Der Glocke, and fly off into outer space long enough? How long is long enough? Where are those Nazi plans I had in my file cabinet?

(7) Ask a random girl for a date, you may still get lucky.

(6) Buy a large bottle of Scotch, and take a shot every time the day slows by one-half hour. When you are out of Scotch, you are out of time.

(5) Take bets from those stupid enough to believe the earth will stop and then start rotating backwards.

(4) Read the Holy Bible front to back, and then back to front, but do not expect the earth to make sense when played backward.

(3) Fasten your seat belt, just in case this is more sudden than you projected.

(2) Play with matches, run with scissors, bet on a long-shot. Your odds just went way up.

(1) Bend over, and kiss everything you hold dear goodbye, because we are all going to meet Jesus in person.

So we all went from being happy in Paradise with Jesus, to the tribulation, to Jesus being un-resurrected to being crucified, then later (earlier) on Noah unloads the animals two-by-two after (before) the backwards flood (I have not devised a way to unflood the whole earth), Adam and Eve get stripped of their clothing and sent to the Garden of Eden as punishment for spitting out the un-bitten apple, and then God finally has had enough and un-creates us?

Jesus wept.

if the earth stops spinning very slowly (say for ex., over a 10,000 day period)so slowly that it didnt create earthquakes or tidal waves, the side facing the sun would get hotter, and all plants would die on the side facing away from the sun. clocks would keep working but there would be no physical day or night......oh, never mind

If it stopped spinning completely...not even once every 365 days, you would get 1/2 year daylight and 1/2 year nightime. During daytime for 6 months, the surface temperature would depend on your latitude, being far hotter that it is now at the equator than at the poles where the light rays are more slanted and heating efficiency is lower. This long-term temperature gradient would alter the atmospheric wind circulation pattern so that the air would move from the equator to the poles rather than in wind systems parallel to the equator like they are now. The yearly change in the Sun's position in the sky would now be just its seasonal motion up and down the sky towards the south due to the orbit of the Earth and its axial tilt. As you moved along constant lines of Earth latitude, you would see the elevation of the Sun increase or decrease in the sky just as we now see the elevation of the Sun change from a single point on the Earth due to the Earth's daily rotation.

air would not move from the equator to the poles, but i wouldnt rule out a pattern of circulation developing

For example, if you were at a latitude of +24 degrees North in the Summer and at a longitude where the Sun was exactly overhead, it would slide gradually to the horizon as Fall approached, but since the Sun has moved 90 degrees in its orbit, it would now be due west. Then as we approach Winter, you would now be located on the dark side of the Earth, and would have to travel in longitude to a location 180 degrees around the Earth to see the Sun 1/2 way up the sky because in the Winter, the Sun is 48 degrees south of its summer location in the sky. It's a little confusing, but if you use a globe of the Earth and orient it the right way, you can see how all this works out.

As for other effects, presumably the magnetic field of the Earth is generated by a dynamo effect that involves its rotation. If the Earth stopped rotating, it's magnetic field would no longer be regenerated and it would decay away to some low, residual value due to the very small component which is 'fossilized' in its iron-rich rocks. There would be no more 'northern lights' and the Van Allen radiation belts would probably vanish, as would our protection from cosmic rays and other high-energy particles. This is a significant biohazard.

Re: What Happens if Earth Stops Rotating?

The Gravity Field would still hold the mass of the Earth together. but the Magnetic Fields would be absent ,and the oceans would not flow and the trade winds would not take place.Since the flow of water induces a magnetic field,by the right hand rule there would be no magnetic north pole. A loss of Earth's spin Energy would create a loss of Earth's orbital Energy relative to the Sun.
One side of the earth would be frozen the other side would be roasting like a turkey. Thus Global warming and Global freezing all at the same instance. There would be no precession of the Poles and no Weather evolution. The one side would have total water evaporation ,the other side frozen lakes. Roasted Humans in one hemisphere and frozen ones on the other. Thus the Earth internals would be Chaotic and the core along with the total earth mass will no longer have a Spin Energy, and Atoms would have a change of angular momentum.
The Universe and everything there in, began as result of Spins and whirlpool of matter rather then a radially exploding singularity.
An exploding singularity would not produce Spin. Thus the control system of the Universe wouldn't have been an Intelligent Designed System.

Yes, basically it would really suck to be present on the earth's surface during that event if it could ever take place, which it cannot.

The more interesting part of the discussion later on in the video was the definition of time equivalence, in oscillations of a cesium atom in a laser field.

The most interesting part: What is life, that we can give it or take it away? What is time really? I believe the span of a man's life is already measured the moment of conception. It can only be influenced by a poor choice of wife. Choose carefully, and stay thirsty.
