Center Doorknob Handle Lock Set

04/19/2015 2:07 PM

I noticed the use of a door knob located in the center of the door on a few BBC shows, even versions with the knob below or above the latch and strike horizontal line. Does anyone have a diagram of the mechanics involved? I suspect it some sort of rack and pinion or similar linkage. Thanks

It must be a gas to approach such a door, wondering which side will open.

As for mechanism, pulleys and wires could also work.

It seems the door would be harder to open with the handle closer to the hinged side.

Who's your butler--Lurch, Riffraff, or Jeeves?

That knob lends more emphasis to the term "Don't let the door hit you in the azz".

That first picture gives a whole new meaning to the phrase: "Don't let the door knob hit you, where the good Lord Split ya!"

You're right, it's a rack and pinion double latching mechanism, also known by its trade name as the "Fox Police Lock".

Re: Center doorknob handle lock set

I have fitted similar units here, but none had a knob, only a key cylinder....they are very safe and a good addition to preventing someone breaking in, preventing even the lock smith (ME!) some years ago.

Few know it here, but after I retired in 2006, life got a bit boring and I went back to school and learnt how to open locked doors, repair and install locking mechanisms and the like.

A customer called in as he had lost one of the two keys he needed to open his front door, the one for the "normal" cylinder. Even though I asked him several times if the Police lock was open (he did not want to give me the key to allow me to check it myself, he was very weird!), I believed that I had opened the normal lock several times, but the door remained closed...(I was simply pushing the deadbolt back with a wire tool)

Eventually I lost my "rag", I INSISTED that he tried that key and he then opened the door!!! It cost him an extra (expensive) hour of my labor!

Not my problem!!

I left the business completely after 7 months as I found it morally wrong in so many ways (I was working for a very suspect company! Most of them are it would seem....)

Though I really liked the work and still do it today for friends and neigbours when needed......for a bottle of whiskey or similar, not money.

What did you Google in order to turn up that phrase? [Catch-22 rides again....]

Maybe we need a stupid manual for Google search terms so that we can not look at it.

Re: Center Doorknob Handle Lock Set

Installed only one, originally made in the early 50's. Had to transfer from an old set doors to new ones, custom made out of solid mahogany, each 40" wide, by 7'6" tall, doubles. The receiver door held the dummy knob, and the active door latch was a circular gear assembly, with the notched (gear) rod passing through it. The lock was activated by turning the key an extra 25 degrees, or so. (Accounting for the extra length past the gear assy.) The hardest part (Besides lifting the damn things--They were HEAVY!!), was drilling a 25 inch , 1 inch bore, hole, straight, so the shaft mechanism would not bind at any point, and so that the drill bit did not "drift" and come out of the door panel midway. Solved that by making a "rifle bore " jig, that forced the bit to go straight 8" , to start, then finishing the bore by hand, with a brace and bit…Took a while to get them hung and tuned, but, they are beautiful. Outside of 4 foot wide Double Dutch doors, they were the hardest ones I ever had to deal with.
