I visited it once almost 30 years ago, it was quite impressive, as were its feats.

The wheel arrangement was designed to enable Big Lizzie to traverse any kind of terrain from hard ground to boggy without sinking in. It is very heavy so spreading the load was a very good idea, and at Lizzie's low speed it worked very well. She was no speed demon but nothing much could stop her either.......

Upon further review, I see that there are two staggered rows of blocks on each wheel.

It made its own road!

Impressive, but what kind of mileage do they get out of the mattresses on the wheels?

I was just up at Redcliff the other day and stoped to look at this strange contraption. It was built in Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne now (I used to live near there). It carried a motor cycle for scouting the track ahead. Those are not matrasses on the wheels but large blocks of wood, red gum I think from memory. 10.6 Mt long x 3.35 W x 5.49 high. Weighs in at 45 tonnes and could carry 10. it had 2 trailers at 9L x 3W and 2.13H that carried 35 tonnes each. It had 4 forward speeds 3.2, 2.4,1.6 and 0.8 km/Hr. and 2 reverse speeds of .4 and .8 km/hr. It had a 61 meter turning circle. It was impressive. Never seen anything quite like it

Hi

Big Lizzie is on display with one of its trailers in its own purpose built enclosure in the park in Red Cliffs Victoria Australia.

It had Bottrill patent wheels, it took Frank Bottrill about 1 year to drive from Melbourne to Red Cliffs his original intention was to go to Broken Hill to cart wool but the Murray river was in flood so he used Big Lizzie to do Land clearing at red Cliffs and some wheat carting as per the picture

The trailers were constructed as large tanks and held enough fuel for about 1 years driving Big Lizzie was powered by one 60 hp Blackstone oil engine. He had to make major repairs to the wheels on his journey North which took months to complete

Cheers

Peugeot man

I almost choked on my drink when I read Big Lizzie, and thought there was an "E" in there somewhere. I really need to upgrade my spectacles, before I make a spectacle.
