Dear Gurus, the engine on my cavalier runs OK and I can get it into gear but it just doesn't seem to move.

Get out of the car and check the front. Is there a brick wall present? If so, re-enter the car and try "reverse" (R position on the gear selector). Check rear-view mirror first.

You could also check for piles of bricks under the car, preventing the driven wheels making contact with the road.

He said 'on' his Cavalier. Not 'in' it.

I think if he wants the engine to move he going to have to move the Cavalier, too.

This could be many things....Is it trying to move? If it just sits there while you rev the engine, it would seem the drive train has failed...possibly the linkage from the shifter to the transmission has broken, or the drive shaft is missing....did this happen without any warning, was everything working without issue before this? If it tries to move by lurching forward then perhaps the parking brake is stuck...In any case you need a mechanic...

This symptom leads me to believe you have unknowingly used counterfeit parts in the past. If you had been using all genuine parts it would crank, just wouldn't start. But before getting too dissapointed, first make sure your wheels don't look like this.

There is a simple solution to this problem. Photograph the vehicle, post it on an internet auction site (name withheld), wait a few days, and then someone will show up with some money, swap it for the vehicle, and take the problm away.

If it is a manual transmission, it is possible someone has rotated your shift knob so it no longer indicates the correct pattern.

You could be the victim of a prank where one drive wheel is jacked up slightly. Get out and look for an A-hole. You will most likely find that they give OT's under the protection of anonymity. This is caused by lack of intestinal fortitude which, unfortunately cannot be adjusted. To prove this, look for another OT on this post.

Re: Cavalier Engine Runs But Car Won't Move

Somehow I have the feeling there is a certain lack of information to allow anyone to draw any conclusion.... Please allow me to quote R. Kipling (as it may be of some help): "The "Five Ws" (and one H) were memorialized by Rudyard Kipling in his "Just So Stories" (1902), in which a poem accompanying the tale of "The Elephant's Child" opens with: I keep six honest serving-men (They taught me all I knew); Their names are What and Why and When And How and Where and Who. This is why the "Five Ws and One H" problem solving method is also called as the "Kipling Method", which helps to explore the problems by challenging them with these questions."

Most likely, but I have heard from people who have no affiliation with cr4, offer unsolicited testimony to the fact that the Cavaliers they have owned, have disintegrated while driving. I imagine you could work the roadsides with a rake and come up with various components , jettisoned from Cavaliers.

- probably enough discarded parts to reconstruct a complete car, which would work as well (if not better than) any other Cavalier.

It's a Cavalier after all. Now it's a very large paper weight.

We seem to get a lot of these broken Cavalier posts. Is it just one guy, or isn't it?

After all these nasty comments ;-) about the Cavalier I checked the web to see how it looked like (It was not produced by GM inArgentina).... and yes, it was quite ugly! Nevertheless the figures are impressive: more than 4 million were sold over 17 years! Why did that happen? so many buyers could not have been wrong! To what segment of the market was it meant for? Was it very affordable?

They sold well to the rental car fleets, as well as municipalities who needed inexpensive vehicles for their employees to drive.

Obviously built to price and with ashort life expectancy built in for free.

We get all sorts of cars from the US plying the roads here, some still with their US plates on them, but I've never seen a Cavalier here. Maybe they disintegrate in the container on the way over?......or the importers aren't fools and buy better cars to stuff containers.

OMG! I'm sorry everyone I didn't expect such a response. Just goes to show what a great bunch you are trying to help someone who doesn't give even the most basic information.

Anyway I think I found out what the problem is

If it is not any of the already posted responses then you might consider rusted brake calipers.

If nothing has then yet been identified as the root cause, I would seriously consider the cause as being: "The nut behind the steering wheel".

Try the IT fix.

Turn off the engine. Get out of the car. Get back in. Start the car again. This time it should move. If not, repeat the process.

Try moving it with another way:

  • Assuming this Cavalier hasn't catastrophically self-disassembled in some way, the Hi-Ab crane on the back of the scrap vehicle collection truck would seem a very suitable equipment selection.
  • About five ounces of RDX placed under it and detonated from a distance would prove effective too.
  • Other options include a Chieftain Tank, etc.

Perhaps the battery is in backwards? If the engine is running backwards the syncros wont sync. Check to see if the lights throw shadows.

What you need to do is push it off a cliff. Then you can have the opposite problem: the engine doesn't run, but the car does move.
