Search Engines

04/30/2015 11:26 AM

I have seen on here where people say "just google it" and at other times someone will say " use a real search engine" what are your favorite search engines. Google or bing don't impress me.

Me too. Google for most things, and wiki if looking for more general terms.

The manufacturer's web site if looking for specifics or product information.

Pump curves motor nameplate information that is specific an item.

Guessing at the output of axial pumps is a waste of time, for instance.

Re: Search engines

There are other search engines???

Nothing comes close to Google, Wikipedia is the best general purpose encyclopedia, but many of its technical articles are less than "scholarly" and there is a bit of bias in many of them. I like to download reference material so any time I find a PDF from a reputable site I grab it.

One thing to watch out for are blogs, good information in many, but you must use your own personal knowledge and additional due diligence to verify the purported information.

I almost always use google.

A lot of the internet cannot be searched with any search engine...

And nobody really knows how big the internet is...and it keeps growing. Scary thought.

Re: Search Engines

I like Google, but find that to get the best results you have to use the search tools. For example:

  • When I search for an image, toggle the usage rights to make sure it's ok to share online.
  • When I search for something that's been in the news, I adjust the time for content that was published recently.
  • When I'm looking for something specific, I use quotes around my phrase or the "-" sign to exclude certain phrases or websites.

In terms of research for a job, a specialized search of service can help access the information in a more targeted way. The way I was introduced to GlobalSpec (now Engineering360) is that when you search "pumps" here you will not get results for shoes... it'll be on topic. IHS Goldfire has also proven to be a valuable tool. Since it's a paid subscription it's not probably not ideal for an individual user, but it's useful in the workplace.

1) How do you toggle the usage rights? I don't even know where to look for that.

2) I'm a long-time heavy user of + and - and enclosing phrases in quotes. I would like Google to add the option to "Search within these results" instead of making ridiculously long strings of +this and -that to narrow down the results.

Hopefully this graphic helps with the usage rights question.

  1. Run your search and then choose the images link
  2. Click the search tools button
  3. On the toolbar that expands down, click on usage rights
  4. Make your selection

You're welcome. There's a similar feature on the regular text search, only it's related to how recent the info is. I find that helpful when trying to research a current event.

Re: Search Engines

Really depends on what you want to look at. Google is king for general enquiries, but can struggle with very specific speciality areas (the deep web for example-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Web), other examples are specific online databases (scientific, medical, research papers, historical archives) where other specialised search engines work well but are pretty useless for general enquires.

Like anything in life one product won't do everything.

Which search engine impresses you then and what are you looking at? I dread to ask not because I think you will mention porn or something illegal but that you many say "why AOL of course!"

I look for a lot of technical manuals for machine controls and when I use google I find sites that want to sell them, and then I find the manufactures page three or four pages deep. It just seems that google has sales company's or distributers first then useful info last.

Re: Search Engines

Old technical manuals that are no longer supported by manufacturers can be difficult. There are specialty databases and search engines for these, but I only know they exist.

Have you tried a Google search for "machine control technical manual search engine" for example? You may be able to find the applicable database or alternative search engine that way (Google's good like that).

Oh, you also may not be able to find free copies online if they do exist, like standards, hard to find or obsolete user machine manuals seem to be user pays more often than not.

Alternatively, yes you may have to contact the manufacturer (cringe) which can be very hit and miss as to how helpful that will be.

Your observation is correct. The info on the right and the three top and bottom positons in the search results are paid for by those seeking to sell you whatever you searched on. Google doesn't receive billions of dollars in revenue from the searchers, just from the advertisers.

Was pattern recognition, where you submit an image of a "what is this" to a search engine, ever developed?

Yes,go to images.google.com and input a picture of whatever you have. It's still under development but sometimes you get a good match, especially if it's a well known image.

When I went back to school there was a whole list of search engines to choose from and I picked one called "Dogpile". It's supposed to merge all the major search engines. I have been using it ever since and it seems to work for me. Besides, it's always fun to see what "Arfie" is up to today. And you click on "Fetch".

Be very careful! There are some kind of software that, when you download the software, switch you from your current search engine to their search engine, or their favorite search engine, without asking. Genio is one such; avoid it like the plague! I'm not sure, this may be only on Macs... Macs have been essentially free of viruses since around '98, but this is getting close. Just recently, Adware has become a significant problem for some gullible Mac Users. AdwareMedic is a big help in this regard.

Re: Search Engines

Ther are so many search engine sites out there that itis hard to suggest just one. I personnally favor those engines which are specific to my topic area (such as PubMed [for a medical related item] and Google Scholar for indepth studies into specific questions]. I also like "Clusty" because it can readily sort out into the sub-topics without going through a selection and review of the numerous items having only partial interest.

When using my tablet, I have an app that brings most of the search engines sites together, but that only makes things haeder to separate (information overload). Try to detenmine tour topic,sub-topics before using a search engine; doing an engineering search on an arts history based search site is counter-productive.

Re: Search Engines

05/01/2015 9:46 AM

My favorite search engine is duckduckgo.com

I has the advantage of NOT 'pre-filtering' like Google does. Google uses your browsing history (not the 'browser history on your HD, the Google analytics on all Google-powered searches you've done from that computer, so what you looked for on Wikipedia, for example, is added to the algorhythm) to decide which of the results you'd prefer to see. This leads to skewed results based on who Google thinks you are. For example, if you put in 'Obama' into Google's search bar, the results will vary depending on whether Google things you are a Republican or a Democrat. The Dems will see the pro-Obama sites at the top of their search, the GOP will see the anti-Obama sites.

DuckDuckGo does not to that, for the same keywords, everyone gets the same results.

You will also notice that when I suggest someone look it up themselves, I will use phrases like 'use your preferred search engine' instead of naming any specific one. The only exception is when I'm feeling 'snippy' and toss out a LetMeGoogleThatForYou link. I seldom do the LMGTFY bit anymore, the sarcasm and, sometimes, derision it typically lost on the recipient. Yes, I said derision, I never claimed to be a saint, I have really bad days too, and occasionally 'lash out' more fiercely than I should. I know it's a character flaw, and I do my best to control it.)

I agree, DuckDuckGo is a great search tool.

It does not "track" your previous searches so all searches are equal.

I, for one, like it when you 'lash out'. As long as it's not me, it is funny.

I tried DuckDuckGo and found that it provides results that would be good IF i lived near California. A search for a local company turns up companies with the same or similar names radiating out from L.A. ( or somewhere else US based, not sure, don't care ) Useless to me downunder. Google gives me nearest first.

I already know I'm funny, but looks are only skin deep.

(Yes, I even zing myself for the sake of a joke, if I believe that NOTHING is above ridicule, that, by definition, include me as well.)

For most technical articles, I use Google Scholar. For Medical related issues, I use PubMed. It makes sense to me to taylor the search engine used to the field you are interested in.

I'll also recommend scholar.google.com

Wolframalpha.com is great for objective facts and math... not just basic math.

Ocw.mit.edu is great for more in depth learning, providing MIT undergrad and grad course material.

Generally I stick with Google/Bing/Yahoo! for most things... but I use different search engines for different things... for example... GlobalSpec is a Search Engine.

For regional-based searches, I'll use Yandex, Maktoob, etc.

For general web searching - if I need comprehensive hits - I stay away from single search engines and lean more towards MetaEngines. The three I use most are:

  • Dogpile
  • WebCrawler
  • Ixquick

Some task-specific engines I use occasionally are:

  • Wolfram Alpha - Just plain awesomesauce!
  • IFACnet - Accounting
  • Thomasnet - Parts/Suppliers
  • GlobalSpec - Parts/Suppliers
  • LexisNexis - Legal

And, finally - for those times when I can't find what I'm looking for on the WWW, I hit up TorSearch, Freenet, GNUnet, ...

There are many search engines but among these.

  1. Google - The search engine giant holds the first place in search with a stunning difference of 45% from second in place Bing. According to the latest report 69.5% of searches were powered by Google and 25% by Bing. Google is also dominating the mobile/tablet search engine market share with 89%!
  2. Bing - Bing is Microsoft's attempt to challenge Google in the area of search but despite their efforts they still did not manage to convince users that their search engine can produce better results than Google.

The few best search engines are:

· Google - No need for further introductions. The search engine giant holds the first place in search with a stunning difference of 45% from second in place Bing. Google is also dominating the mobile/tablet search engine market share with 89%!

· Bing - Bing is Microsoft's attempt to challenge Google in the area of search but despite their efforts they still did not manage to convince users that their search engine can produce better results than Google.

· Yahoo - Since October 2011 Yahoo search is powered by Bing. Yahoo is still the most popular email provider and according to reports holds the third place in search.

· Ask.com- Formerly known as Ask Jeeves, Ask.com receives approximately 3% of the search share. ASK is based on a question/answer format where most questions are answered by other users or are in the form of polls. It also has the general search functionality but the results returned lack quality compared to Google or even Bing and Yahoo.
