Don't You Just Love Google Translate?

04/30/2015 1:29 PM

I went to Google Translate to convert a Japanese document into English. Here's how the title came out:

There is no mat! No hose! Elephant mark new futon dryer power of "smart dry"!

...so this must be where all those weird gibberish posts come from. (Thanks a heap, Google.)

If you want to see how good or bad it is, take a passage in English, translate it into another language, and then back into English.

It might make a good party game... guess what the original was about.

That's about how well Siri interprets what I try to tell her! Something definitely gets lost in translation once a computer gets involved.

So, your elephant soiled your futon and it needs to be dry-cleaned?

Just slow down, and treat it as a roundabout.

A circus worker who erects and dismantles tents, cares for the grounds, and handles animals and equipment?

Whether from computers or from people ( engrish.com ) certain nonstandard translations are hilarious.

Some people have a difficult time understanding that the translation in itself is funny. It is not ridiculing or belittling the person (or computer) attempting the translation. There isn't a need for someone to point t at and laugh. No one even needs to be credited with the translation.

I hope the hilarity of Google Translate 's attempts can get some people to loosen up a bit and refrain from sounding the bigotry - racism alarm for things like those found on engrish.com

I remember going to the World's Fair and going into the IBM exhibit where they had a few mainframes, one of which was a translation system where you could input something in English and get it back in a few languages.

I typed in "Out of sight, out of mind" then put the Russian translation back in to see what would come back in English, it said "blind and insane". Idioms didn't translate well 50 years ago, still don't translate well, and probably never will.

Well, if you can't read Japanese, how do you know that isn't what the original document said?

And maybe it was translated from English to German to Chinese and then to Japanese first.

We seem to have been spared the gibberish spam lately.

This translation makes about as much sense as the operator's manual for a Komatsu punch press

FWIW, google translate is better with tagolog than many other online translaters.

imho :)

because it uses the most commonly used word

YouTube has a channel of Google Translate Parody Songs. Some are actually funny:

My favorite translation from a Godzilla movie: "Godzilla is attacking the city! Why would I be telling you this if I was lying?"
