Never give up!

What is the question indicating? A tremble? A doubt?

Just never give up or become and artist, politician, scientist or just become yourself.

Else

Fact is you never stop learning. Nor should you. Keep it up.

So give up, as your post appears that you have doubts as to this being what you want to spend your life doing.

Change majors, as engineering is not your passion.

Remember, perfection is a laudable goal that can never be achieved by mortals. It is far more important to recognize your own weaknesses than it is to hope to correct them.

As for the implied idea that a good engineer gives up studying, this only happens when a good engineer dies. If you were hoping that you would not have to study after your formal academic training then engineering is not the correct career for you.

Usually the harder the task, the more rewarding it is....Just think how rewarding it will be to overcome all the obstacles required in achieving your goal....Nothing worthwhile in life is easy...When the going gets tough the tough get going....Discipline is necessary to have a good character....Don't consider failure as a possibility, only think of how you will accomplish your goal....The longest journey begins with a single step....every day of hard work brings you closer to your goal, you cannot fail as long as you remain on the path towards your goal...looking forwards always looks longer than looking back....anything can be accomplished one step at a time....take it one step at a time....surround yourself with like minded successful people...

Get a box and go live on the streets for awhile. See what you may have to look forward to if you do give up.

Re: The Way To Be Never Give Up!

There is much more to life than "studying the engineering's subjects". It is personally very rewarding to handle the hard and challenging tasks but "all work and no play" will make you a worse and less productive engineer. Get involved with other things that have less to do or nothing to do at all with engineering. Get a hobby(s), do volunteer work, spend some time with the family (you might even like them if you see more of them), see the relatives, go to a movie, etc.

It is a proven fact that many people who strive to obtain perfection in their field or other endeavors become clinically depressed since they set their goals so high that they are unattainable. This always failing to meet your self set expectations brings on depression which is sometimes a very hard condition to handle.

The depression, if the person is unable to handle it can lead to suicide NOT A GOOD THING! Depression is a chemical imbalance in the body, not a thing to be ashamed of. Do something other than engineering, who knows you may like it!

I have noticed in this world that there are fewer people who have these types of health problems among those who have a very diverse and "non-perfectionist" lives. Follow their lead, enjoy life!

Good Luck, Old Salt

Depends on the student, there is no single right answer to this question. You either find motivation or you have motivation.

Is the student you? What happed to your goal to get a Masters Degree in computer science, do you now want to be an Engineer instead?

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/100702

I would post a Yoda quote but I am not sure you would understand it.

What do YOU want, lets start there and this forum can all decide how best you can achieve it?

I disagree. This forum can not decide anything for anyone. We can provide guidance to those that want to be guided. I am not even inclined to make decisions for anyone here nor would most of us not allow it to happen.
Simply put: everyone and Mr Z included needs to make their own decisions.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor

I need to check the news again did they just do it this morning?

(Pearl Harbour was actually bombed by the Japanese in WWII).

When the going gets tough, the tough get going

Nice motivation, the Germans lost by the way and had pretty much lost the war by this point in history and took a lot of people with them. Sort of like some of our other CR4 threads I suppose (lost causes, etc).

Jeeze, I should have just quoted Star Wars, more people around the world have seen that than the movie Animal house.

"Oh come on, how were we supposed to get that joke, I've seen the movie once."

I didn't even need to know the source, the glaring mistake told me it was a 'Bushism,' which is similar to a Yogiism. The difference is that Yogi Berra said things that didn't make sense at first, but did when you looked at them a second time. "Nobody goes there [to that resturaunt] anymore, it's too crowded." "If people don't want to go to [see] the game, nothing's gonna stop them." "You can observe a lot by looking." And who can forget Yogi's own comment on Yogiisms, "I didn't say everything I said." (Many of the Yogiisms were coined by someone else and missattributed to Yogi.)

Bushisms, on the other hand, Seem to be trying to make sense, but either devolve into nonsense, or end up meaning the opposite of what was intended. "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?" "They misunderestimated me." "There's an old saying in Tennessee-I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee-that says, 'Fool me once, shame on...shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again.'"

Jack,

Here in the US, Animal House is a classic! The stuff John Belushi did was phenomenal. Did you ever see his Saturday Night Live (SNL) skits? The man was a genius!

By the way, other than "Let the force be with you.", what other Star Wars quotes are as memorable as Belushi's?

I know that particular movie is an American classic but it is less well known outside of America. I have seen Belushi is some of his later works although I never really got into regularly watching SNL (it was just too late for me). While visiting the Chicago area I did eat cheese stuffed mushrooms at the restaurant that was the inspiration for the famous bar scene in the movie Blues Brothers.

By the way, other than "Let the force be with you.", what other Star Wars quotes are as memorable as Belushi's?

There are many but the one I was thinking of was

"Do. Or do not. There is no try."

I have a bad feeling about this...

Laugh it up, fuzzball.

Do, or do not, there is no try.

The force is strong in this one.

"I love you." "I know."

It's a trap!

I'd rather kiss a Wookee.

Never tell me the odds!

Aren't you a little short to be a stormtrooper.

There are not the droids you're looking for.

...retched hive of scum and villany.

And that's just off the top of my head, and only thinking of Chapters IV-VI.

Oh yes, posting that particular one to the OP in post #10 may would have sent the wrong message.

I'm actually trying to help the OP here (if he ever answers back) but I think we may be getting side tracked.

Well, considering we Just got past 5/4/2015, aka, May 4th, or May, the forth(1), and May fifth, right after(2),it makes sense that I'd end up with a bit of Star Wars on the brain.

Notes:

  1. May the Fourth be with you.
  2. Being the day after Star Wars Day (see note1), it's naturally Revenge of the Fifth.

Engineering students need to work under tremendous pressure to understand the basics of engineering profession and to excel in their studies. One should not be afraid of pressure. Remember that pressure is what turns a lump of coal into a diamond. The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra one put. The only preparation for tomorrow is the right use of today. Use today wisely.

Jokes apart. There is tremendous pressure on the engineering students. May be to-day syllabus is very hard or lot of subjects to study. Recently a student in final year at IIT Mumbai got fed up with his performance at exams that he committed suicide in the campus. IIT has student counselling dept, but it did work for this boy. There many such cases in schools here too.

Committing suicide because of exam performance seems pretty stupid to me. I guess you could say that guy gave up...too bad.

I don't mind stupid people killing themselves, I just wish they would do it somewhere where no one has to see it or clean up their mess. They should at least be considerate enough to go in the woods or something.

Strive for As and Bs, but never forget the old adage... Cs get degrees.

Some of the most competent engineers I have known were average students. An A in thermodynamics is fine, but it doesn't guarantee future success in your chosen field. One of the most worthless engineers I have ever worked with supposedly graduated with a 3.9 GPA in engineering from a very prestigious university. She was apparently good at taking exams, but not much else.

Get the degree and find a job. From that day forward, nobody will care about your grades in college. They will care about whether you are completing your work on time and using good judgment day-in and day-out.

Most of the time in life we ask the wrong questions. Rather than asking "why" we should do something we ask "how or what". The "WHY" is the most important part. If we don't know what it is that we want to accomplish we won't have a good reason to endure when things get tough, and they will. Having tough times is a given part of life.

Define>Learn>Do. Define what you want in life, i.e. lifestyle, vacation time, business ownership or employee, family, based upon skills and interests, etc. As Stephen Covey said, "begin with the end in mind." Next, Learn from someone who has those results. Finally, Do what they do or did to accomplish the Define part. Too often we Do whatever is available, Learn on the job and that Defines our lifestyle.

As someone else Posted; staying hungry to learn is a prerequisite to whatever we do in life. We don't live in a static environment and we need to be learning and growing on a daily basis. As Ray Kroc said, "are you green and growing or ripe and rotting?"

Good Answer!

A few years ago, I took a tour of our local charter school. One of the first things that impressed me is that the Seven Habits are on the walls (in vinyl letters). The rest of the culture of the school follows, with famous quotes (not Belushi's) on each classroom door. Add to this the philosophy of teaching and I was sold on the school. So much so, that I gladly accepted their nomination to be on the Governing Board.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and advice!

Exactly the same way to be the worlds best ditch digger. Motivation. Commitment. Desire. Careful planning. Implementation. Goal oriented.

If engineering was easy, everyone would do it. If you aren't sufficiently excited by the possibilities an engineering education provides for you, then maybe you need to take a break, or direct your energy elsewhere.

I grew tired of learning through school and my early career, then gradually realized that learning is right near the top of every engineering job description. (If it's already all figured out, it's just production, not creation.) I never wanted to work a factory floor, restaurant or customer service for a living, so I re-kindled my love of learning. Creativity is fun, labor is not.

Even those who humans don't want to learn end up learning every time they try or encounter something new. So you've got that going for you.

GA Lynn.Wallace

As LIFE Leadership Co-Founder Orrin Woodward says, "if you want to wake up an adult get him learning again." Learning is one of the best things we can do, and then applying what we have learned is a great joy. It completes the loop of moving forward in life.

As John "Coach" Wooden said, "it's what you learn after you think you know it all that really counts."

Someone else said, "What you learn in school will make you a living. What you learn after school by way of a self-directed education will make you wealthy."

Great advice! GA for you! What do they say? When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

Maybe the student isn't ready yet, but it surely doesn't mean that he never will be.

Zakaria,

I am a businessman who was fortunate enough to get an engineering degree and work in the field for five years. This site is amazing and the people here are not only some of the smartest you will ever meet, but they are also very helpful. I think I'm a pretty smart man, but the people here put me to shame.

I can only speak for myself, regarding what I went through in college. There were times I wanted to throw in the towel and take an easier route. The times when my friends would come by and do their best to get me to go to a party or head downtown for some fun. It was so hard for me to say no, then stick my nose back in my books - so very hard! Or the times when I took a test and I know I didn't do well. I dreaded seeing the grades posted!

How did I keep going? I had a goal in mind - what I wanted to do with my life, not just "I need to graduate college". I wanted to be a success in life and I knew that getting an engineering degree would be difficult, but it was what I needed to do. I took it one test at a time and soon the semester was over. Then the year was over. Finally, I was one semester from graduating and I had pretty good grades! Yes, it was me - the one who didn't take a book home during his entire time in high school!

I also am not a quitter. The word is not in my dictionary. As I've matured, I analyze things better and if it doesn't make sense, I choose to stop or change course - it's helped me be not only a more successful businessman, but also helped my family and social life as well.

To summarize, you need to set up your long term goals (what you want your life to look like) and ask yourself it engineering is right for you. If not, there are many different avenues available to you. Be open minded, be honest with yourself and always do what is best for you. I wish you good luck.

For engineering, keep fresh coffee handy.

For classical physics, keep beer handy
For relativistic physics, keep wine handy
For quantum physics, keep whiskey handy
For cosmology, keep pot handy
For theology, keep LSD handy
Beyond that, keep meth handy.

[cribbed, with addenda, from W.C. Fields]
