CNC Spindles!!!

05/08/2015 10:19 PM

I got a couple of books on cnc machine design for the hobbies. After going through them I found out the machines have to be a special build and I may have to make three machines to make everything I wanted to do with them. I was wondering whats the best spindle for home 3 d cnc machines? I saw in the video they can cut all the way to the table in 3d. But for large item like small boats I thought I needed a special spindle for the curve inside the boat shell and to cut 3d designs. So I found this websites with spindles on it. I was looking for a strong spindle that has a arm that can move in both directions. Does anyone know what they are called and wgere I can get one?

Anything you cut on a cnc or nc or manual milling machine, lathe, EDM, and other machine, will be in three dimensions.

More information will give you a better chance at getting useful input here.

.

Is this for metal, wood, or other material?

What exactly isn't you want to do that will require three machines?

What are the machines you believe you need? For example, a lathe, milling machine, and 3d printer.

I was wanting to make statues up to 2 feet tall, so I thought about cnc lathe. found little blue prints for one on internet!

I wanted to make 3d trimming for houses so I thought about router table large about 12 ft long maybe.

I wanted to make small boats so I thought about router with robotic like spindle that can move and bend to each side.

It would all be wood working.

If you are looking to do long stuff like trim it makes more sense to use a shaper rather than a router, unless you want the design to change down the length (perhaps, where you reside, it is all the rage to have inpirational messages carved into the trim of a home). You can feed whatever length stock available into a typical shaper.

A large router table for wood seems likely to rarely, if ever be used in a way that the extra size is critical. Wood very rarely today is available as a single solid piece that has two or more dimension that might be considered very large.

Sure large things are built out of wood, but if it is going to be assembled from multiple pieces, those might as well be chapel while they are easy to handle.

Take your small boat example. I assume you are talking about a small boat for a person and not an rc or scale model. Yes, there are still tree trunks harvested that are big enough for a canoe to be carve out. However, that really seems like doing it the hard, expensive, wasteful way.

Just drying a trunk like that without cracking is tricky. Then the shipping will be a hassle and costly. Just getting it around the shop and onto the various equipment will take a hoard of helpers or rigging. Then more than 90% will be ground to chips and dust.

.

Wood lathes can be purchased used in many places at pretty low prices. Craigslist usually has a couple for sale regularly, even for small communities. Get a cheap one and learn what you like and don't like, so that when you put the effort into constructing your own wood working machinery....even if it isn't a lathe, you will have some experience to fall back on.

I believe that more research is in order, because I'm not sure you grasp what a spindle is.

Spindle (tool) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A cnc machine (also called a machine center) can cut in 3 dimensions with a single tool holder. (Spindle)

That Wiki article is incomplete, and the second photo showing the lathe tail stock is just plain wrong. A spindle MUST rotate to be called that. The tail stock has a Quill, that is fixed from rotating. It may hold a tool bit, but it's the lathe head stock that has the spindle.

This was beaten into me when I was a babe engr. and a machinist corrected me.

The tail stock shown in the Wiki article has a power feed, but does not spin.

It's too bad the wiki article does not have the IP for spindle design. I've always wanted to understand the design considerations for a spindle and it's bearings.

Semantics.

Anyway, nobody, but nobody would turn statues on a lathe.

You're right, and that "multi-spindle" lathe has multiple cutting tools, but I suspect only one spindle. Unless I'm mistaken, the spindle is on the left, not shown!

You mean like this?

http://www.techniksusa.com/aggregate/Smart_aggregate_vario.htm

these are pretty large for a hobby CNC.

you can buy a motor with a tool holder here.

Maybe incorporate an angle setting in the mount.

yes thanks! Is it a plug in to another part or can you wire the top to a cnc controler?

Maybe you just need an multi-axis ornamental mill....

You might consider 3D printing instead. Or a staff of elves working Play-Doh.

Re: CNC Spindles!!!

My suggestion would be a CNC with:

  • A 5 axis controller
  • A fourth or "A" axis that would be a rotary head where it can rotate the work.
  • Look at this to get some ideas.
  • If you're wanting to do some 12' long pieces then you will need to custom make your own machine.
  • Making the machine is half the fun.
