Dear all,

I am a student doing Masters in ENERGY Systems having my background work experience in the field of energy audits.

I have to start my thesis in a company ( automation and power technologies )but i am unable to find any topic of research.

Can someone pl suggest me the source or some research topics.

Your help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks and regards

How about taking an existing company and documenting the present energy usage, and comparing it with automation possibilities and on-site power generation scenarios for cost comparison analysis....? Take that as an example and defining current state of industry across a certain sector and projecting time line of cost savings at current rate of change and new technology adoption, and suggesting ways to improve rate of modernization...comparing that with current power sources operating at this time and what future needs might be taking into account current political climate towards sustainable energy sources and methods...then making a timeline of probable energy needs and sources going forward into the future...and what policies might be adopted to accommodate projected changes...?

I have to start my thesis in a company ( automation and power technologies )but i am unable to find any topic of research.

Do you work for this company or have any experience with this company? Are they assisting to fund your education? What do you want to do the thesis on?

My advice would be to look around the company, talk to people and see if there is a want, need or improvement that could benefit the company that you could do a thesis on. It is sooooo much easier when the thesis is both practical and beneficial rather than theoretical and random.

Let us know what you come up with.

I have been invited to make a presentation in this company and tell the the topic on which i would like to do the thesis on. Its a company that has business interests in automation and power technologies and my previous work experience, before my M.S has been in the filed of ENERGY AUDITS, so i guess some topic related to ENERGY EFFICIENCY would be the best.

So i need suggestions about thesis topics related to Energy Efficiency.

Research the company online then and see if you can come up with something that would benefit the company in question and turn it into a thesis idea.

Are they a manufacturer? What's the name of the company?

Will you start your presentation with, " Thank you. I am totally clueless and resorted to polling an anonymous forum to ask them, who know nothing about me, my experience or education, nor anything about the company I am presenting to" for ideas.

At least that way, your presentation will not be given under false pretenses that may lead the company to believe that you did this on your own.

Try contacting some other sources. Maybe prayer will help.

Maybe you could present on ways the company could produce an energy efficiency audit expert system, that would be a tool for analysis of energy utilization versus wastage.

Energy Utilization could be defined in the energy used in producing an acceptable good or service for the marketplace, an example of which could be a plant that uses a lot of energy, but produces an exceptionally high quality product, and in large numbers consistent with demand.

Energy wastage could be defined as heavy energy expenditures that did not result in products for market, even if in the example the energy consumed was a small amount, but it resulted in less production, poor quality items, or no or steadily decreasing production.

It all depends on "the box" you draw, what you put in that box, and how to define the terms that describe the box.

SMPS, Friend or Foe of the Power Grid.

Will that do for a thesis title and topic.

If your posts are anything to go by, I suggest you learn to use a spell-checker, and either learn to proof-read accurately or find someone reliable and able to proof-read for you before submitting your thesis (whatever the topic).

Are you sure you should be contemplating a Masters thesis if you can't think of a topic that needs investigating? Maybe some practical experience in your field would be needed in order to expose you to the problems that need attention.

If English is not your first language and you're planning to matriculate at an institution where English is the language of instruction, then my suggestion would be that you forget about the MES degree for now and concentrate first on getting an English proficiency certification under one of the following programmes: IELTS, TOEFL, MELAB or EAP. If English is your first language - .... you definitely need to do an Academic Upgrading programme first!

You can consult your MS thesis supervisor. He may be having list of projects. Also you can consider to study the use of BMS in energy saving. Since HVAC is high energy consumption building services Comparison study on various types of compressors taking their efficiency as one of the parameters.

Re: Suggest Source or a Thesis Topic on Energy Efficiency

May I suggest a comparison of the differences on their own, between the efficiencies of solar cells to produce domestic mains electricity and the efficiencies of collecting the heat of the Sun for providing domestic heating and hot water.

Then comparing them combined in the modern method of cooling solar cells to increase their efficiency (quite dramatically from what I have read just for keeping them relatively cool!), usually with water, because the cells need to be in the Sun, but don't like getting hot!

This cooling water system then supplies warmed water for domestic heating and hot water systems.....a Win-Win situation....promoting possibly a better, off the grid possibility for domestic housing needing power and heat.....

I read somewhere that it achieved a far higher efficiency than either of the previous systems on their own, but still using basically the same technologies.......it sort of tickled my interest that without an advance in technology, just good lateral thinking, overall efficiency was dramatically increased....

I wonder if there are even other technologies around, that with better (more lateral?) thinking, combined with other technologies, will also be made to simply work better for all concerned!!!

I hope this tickles your interest!!

I'm a retired engineering professor (Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer). The normal procedure for a student to find a thesis topic was to first find a faculty member knowledgeable in the area of your interest and to discuss it with them.

If your adviser doesn't approve your topic, you won't meet the requirements of the degree.

If nothing comes to mind immediately, yes see your prof. In my case, there were so many choices given by them it was hard to choose, so I took on one that no one else seemed to want. Suited me very well as there was an apparatus and support machines that had to be built from scratch - I really enjoyed that part. Everyone else in the class took the theoretical approach. No hands on, just research and write.

I suggest that you should take project on "Alternate Source of Energy" and concentrate on developing countries as cost energy is going up these days and poor people pay through nose. You can consider Solar Energy, Wind Mills or anything else which will be economically not very expensive so poor countries can afford them.

How about the efficiencies in storing energy in various types of batteries? I thought of this without reading any of the other posts or Googling.

By now, at the writing of a Master's Thesis, you should know enough about your discipline to understand its issues and complexities. What in your field interest you the most?

Re: Suggest Source or a Thesis Topic on Energy Efficiency

Consider looking a bit more closely at the fundamental functional requirements associated with energy use, and determine the minimal energy is to meet those needs.

For example. The current requirement is to light a hallway. Really looking at it, one might decide that the right requirement would be to have enough illumination to each person in the hallway for them to see where they are going, and read a newspaper in their hands.

The current method required leaving the lights on in the hallway, full brightness, all day and night. Perhaps they use fluorescent lights to save some money.

Changing the requirement means that if no one is in the hall, the lights are off. When someone is in the hall, it may mean that where they are the light is intense, but further away the lights are dimmed (but not off). If a sign is needed, it is well lit, even if the area around it isn't. (The refrigerator light is only on when the door is open.)

Now, compare the current energy usage with how much energy would be required if the new requirements were met. Find technologies which would allow you to meet the new requirements easily. (light and occupant sensors, etc). Look at the return on investment for the expenses required to switch to meeting functional based requirements.

Re: Suggest Source or a Thesis Topic on Energy Efficiency

Are you absolutely, positively sure the refrigerator light goes off when you close the door? Secondly, if you couch your proposed solution to lighting a hallway (long, dark one) in terms of how a woman might view it, you might find out that she might not feel safe, if a creep is lurking in the shadows. Oh, wait, the lights come on with proximity. Hopefully these are not motion sensor activated, but are based on some other means of sensing a "human" nearby.

I say, if you want the women to feel safe: (1) train them in marital arts, (2) give them free firearms training, and issue them all concealed carry permits, (3) educate young "men" that if they value what God has given them, they should not lurk in shadows, and that they should start treating women well, be polite, stop committing the mental crime of lust.

Another major consideration involves how well used the passageway is, and what the traffic pattern is at various times of the day. Also users of the hallway should by default consent to reasonable search and surveillance by entering the hallway. Each person entering the hallway should be documented with durable photo-evidence. Any audible high-pitched screams should also activate all lights, all cameras, and lock-down the hallway/tunnel - only accessible by police personnel during lock down.

One final engineering aspect could help reduce the likelihood of crime taking place in dimly lit hallways: better engineering of rope and gallows, and judges not afraid to mete out appropriate punishment for the monsters who violate women.
