05/26/2015 5:05 PM

I mentioned this movie in the thread on screws. Luckily it's on line..here it is for a real education in engineering!

I have not had a chance to view more than a minute or two of this but it looks very interesting. I have always wondered how anyone even with modern equipment could drill a hole as deep as a rifle barrel. I have a hard time drilling a straight hole in something as thin as sheet metal. This will be an interesting watch sometime soon.

Thanks for the posting.

I had seen this long ago, when I was into shooting and reloading. It is an excellent demonstration of craftsmanship.

I was especially impressed with the barrel forging and rifling operation.

Thanks for the memories.

My thanks for posting the link. I had rented the VCR video tape decades ago, but hadn't seen it since.

I just realized that I cannot GA an original post (it's not an answer?)

I guess it's a 5 star Good Post * * * * *

That sounds like the late David Brinkley from NBC News narrating. Haven't heard that voice in years.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed that...sure makes you appreciate electric motors....Like trades today that require a great deal of skill in many different areas, I have to believe there were not a lot of people who could do this well....even so they probably didn't make a lot of money, but probably made a comfortable living...

That video brings back memories of polishing molds with riffler files, emery cloth and then polishing stones. One mistake could cost hours of polishing the surrounding area to match! It sure takes focus and dedication to do a job like that day in and day out!

Thank you for sharing. I always had wondered how these were made. Now I know, and if we go back to caveman days, I can make one from dead cars. (but why bother when all the rifles anyone will need can be found (that is if no one is guarding the henhouse any more).

Once again, much appreciated. It gives me hope that I can create something beautiful, but not as beautiful as a musket in my own shop at home. Maybe my little turbine project will add a flourish or two before it is done.

So far, I have not needed to forge any part of the turbine. I will be looking at using a low tonnage press to make thin discs for the Mark II machine. The Mark I, present construction, I had the discs made at a local sheet metal company (made of aluminum for low temperature fluid runs).

Awesome. Work like that is all-but a lost art nowadays. Thanks very much for sharing.
