140th Preakness Stakes

06/06/2015 1:29 PM

Using your highly honed engineering skills, can you determine who will be the winner.

I say American Pharoah by a nose.

That's a hard one, but I would like to see a triple crown winner also.

American Pharoah already won the Preakness Stakes. Today's race is the Belmont race. It would be nice to have another Triple Crown winner but I doubt it will happen today. It was a real fluke to have three Triple Crown winners in five years. IMHO Secretariat is still the best.

I agree Secretariat was the best. By over powering its competition.

And Belmont is a longer track. And that will separate it.

Secretariat was, without a doubt the greatest horse ever. He won the Belmont by 31 lengths and still holds the records in all three Triple Crown races.

At the time, they were complaining that Secretariat had no competition, as in the competition was slow. But even that, that horse was quick.

He was the best.

His owner, Penny Cheney, was at Belmont Park today.

You called it!!!!!

Great answer.

I had him across the board for $5.00 to win. Hardly worth cashing in the ticket.

Great race none the less.

Wish there were more like her.

He won all three! I was there at Belmont Park on Saturday. It was great to witness an incredible moment in history. American Pharoah is a great horse. He ran the second fastest Belmont Stakes; his time was just two seconds off Secretariat's record.

two seconds is a lot....

But then it was against Secretariat's record.

Only 7 horses have run the Belmont Stakes faster than 2:27 since 1927. I'd say his time was pretty good. (Prior to 1927 the race was a shorter distance.)

Re: 140th Preakness Stakes

Forgot to add my engineering analysis...

American Pharoah has a great stride. If you watch the horses (especially the ones right behind Frosted) trying to catch him in the stretch run, they look like they are taking a step and a half for each of his strides. His stride is longer and smoother. That's why he won. The angle of his stride has actually been compared to Secretariat's.

He's also matured into a sensible horse, so he didn't let the crowd bother him. (I'm sure his ear plugs helped, too.) He also did not fight his jockey. Others have lost this race in the past because the jockey tried holding the horse in the early stages of the race to keep a slower pace. The horses wore themselves out fighting the jockey and had nothing left for the finish.

On the down side,...... of engineering analysis is the stresses that occur to the horse.

The one that comes to mind is Ruffian, which I saw. And the episode just so happened at Belmont also. And there has been others since.

Among the races under consideration are the Jim Dandy at Saratoga in upstate New York on Aug. 1; the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth in New Jersey on Aug. 2; the Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 22; and the Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 29.

Re: 140th Preakness Stakes

It's been confirmed that he will race through the end of 2015. His final race will likely be the Breeder's Cup Classic in October. I imagine his next race will be the Haskell at Monmouth Park if he is ready to return to racing by the end of July. New Jersey is his owner's home state and trainer Bob Baffert typically sends horses to the Haskell instead of the Jim Dandy at Saratoga Racecourse. He may head to the Travers at Saratoga or the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park after that.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for him to go to Saratoga so I could get a chance to see him up close!
