Mechanical Design Student

Good day!

I would like to ask if there can anyone with a handbook on Bolt Strength.. On how much torque each kind of bolt needs.

Thank you.

Actually a quick Google should find it.

As a mechanical design student, you have to be more self sufficient.

I agree with you, he is going to be surprised at what he learns about lubricants also.

A good rule-of-thumb is "flog it up until it breaks, then back it off a quarter of a turn".

You seem to have been a student for 5 years now.

A good mechanical engineer would already posses all these items, or know where to find them readily by performing a simple internet search.

For the price, this Pocket Ref - Barnes & Noble the best book money can buy.

Yes, this is a shameless endorsement.

Vicor Power Supplies sent me one of those for free.

Sits right in front of all my other references on the shelf above my desk, easiest to grab.

Was that for failure to display resourcefulness?

Measuring bolt load is OK if you want to tighten to the recommended bolt load, 85% of the proof load (provided you know that from the bolt grade).

But it doesn't help if the required load is lower, and is not known to reasonable accuracy. I have a manual for ductile iron pipework, which says for flange bolting grease the threads. It gives recommended torques and says these are approximate as the relation between torque and load is not precisely predictable. But it doesn't give recommended bolt loads so even if you have a way to measure that it doesn't help. For anything above the lowest grade bolts, recommended torque is much lower than the 85% proof load torque.

One of the books you should also own is the Machinery's Handbook.

The first time I bought this book was in 1947 and the last time it was revision #22 in 1984. I still use it today.

The currently revision #29 is available on Amazon.

To a designer,.... the Machinery's Handbook is known as their bible.

That's why it was first on my list.

If you call yourself a machinist of mechanical engineer and don't have one, you're kidding yourself.

But, the Pocket Ref is much handier to carry around. My copy was printed in 1998.

yes, I find that the writing in the machinery's handbook has gotten too small.
