Take out the old one and put in a new one. First determine if sufficient space is available, and if the motor power will be enough.

What material is the impeller made of? The best solution may be to buy a new one and cut it to the required size.

Be sure to have it properly balanced after machining.

I have a few questions regarding your choice to increase the size of the impeller:

  • Why are you increasing the impeller size?
  • What is your current GPM out of the pump?
  • What is the HP on the motor?
  • Does your pump bowl have the room to increase the impeller size?

My suggestions are stated below:

  • Contact your pump manufacturer and ask them if they have an impeller in stock.
  • Discuss the new impeller that is of the size you want and have the pump manufacturer give you all the new pump curves to see if it will work.

Typically the reason you modify the impeller is to get:

  • Better / higher flow
  • Better efficiency
  • Less cavitation

Answer a few of the questions above and maybe you will get your answers?

Easy. Get on the phone, and talk it through with the pump manufacturer.
