What Is This

06/13/2015 6:29 PM

Since we were invited, and since the local historical society doesn't know what it is . . . Does anyone here know what it is?

Apparently the barrel shaped part clamps to something, the round rod moves in the barrel, and the end of the round part has a slot for something else to fasten into; it has a wing nut on the far side.

A very fine looking piece of craftsmanship, whatever it is.

Something to be proud of making.

Thanks SE. The Louisville Nimishillen Historical Society has had this on display for months asking people to identify it. No one did--but we don't get bunches of people. Now I wonder if we can find the embroidery hoop? Or modify one with that bit of wood fastened on?

I think it would be hard to find without the whole assembly....the hoop themselves sell for a few dollars at Michaels...then just a piece of oak glued on shaped properly should be an easy project....

WOW!!!

What is it for and what is it called?

My guess, seeing it all in one piece, is its something for needlepoint/embroidery or similar. Maybe invisible mending....

The nation news this morning had a story about how the number of older apprentices was increasing in the UK as people are finding that they have to re-train. They defined 'older' as over 45.

I have a question: is anyone free to post to "What is this?" I have something I would like to submit. Is there a procedure/location I need to go to or permission I need to get and how do I get it? I did a quick search of the site and didn't see answers to the above.

Post it directly or send it to gs-cr4admin@ihs.com.

Or SavvyExacta, one of the mods.

Thanks. I think I'll live dangerously and try posting it directly ... into General Discussion and see what happens.
