Techonology Substitute for Doping

06/24/2015 9:46 AM

Is there anyway, substitute technology/method or shortcuts aside from doping materials to create n-type and p-type semiconductor, preferably a cheaper alternative?

I'll have that!

If there were, then it would be commercially sensitive information, and companies do not broadcast commercially sensitive information on the internet. Why? <...I'll have that!...> So will many others, thereby destroying the commercial advantage of withholding the information!

Asking the same question in a different format rarely yields better results:

P-type and N-type Material for Solar Cell

As the (finally) relevant AP said, if it did, you wouldn't be able to order it from McMaster Carr anyway.

That makes it a duplicate thread. Reported.

It seems that you do not understand solid state theories or the technique of doping. What you've asked for is not even a contradiction. If I had to label the type of thing you've asked for I'd call it a self fulfilling impossibility. Something like asking if you can make water without using any Hydrogen or Oxygen in the reagents.

P and N type semiconductors are very, very, very pure crystalline materials made of nearly one and only one non-metal element on the periodic table. It is the impurity that makes it either a P or N semiconductor. The most common non-metal element used is the most common element of the crust, silicon. The expense in making a semiconductor is not the raw materials but in the process of making them so pure that one even controls which impurities get applied.

Now there are new approaches being tried every day to directly and indirectly convert solar energy into electrical energy. Maybe the P N junction solar array will become a thing of the past. Who's to say.

I was looking for someone to dispute the idea, otherwise I'll go looking for another way of doing it. Manipulating Group 3, 4, 5 elements in any simple process might be the answer.

How about just making the chips out of wood

Yea, not exactly relevant to the specific topic (solar doping is it?), still from my inbox this morning to yours.

Yea, but in the lab. Far from commercialisation outside lab experiments (if it will ever be viable).

Still, development continues in the field of alternative materials. Replacing Silicon with Boron is one more example (plenty more).
