Intriguing. I bet that this technology will fall in the realm of useful for some and much to do over nothing for others. Discerning which camp you're in will be the hard part.

Neither do I. I just need to spend a few hours at work reading proposals.

I think that we're more adaptable than that. There's enough truth, plausibility and charm in the ad to push our complacent, non-reasoning masses over the edge and buy them. Excellent marketing!

Just some personal ramblings about my take on this idea.

They may be on to something here. I've been trying to understand why some nights I sleep very well and some I am awake multiple times. I noticed 2 nights this week where I slept much better (Didn't wake up 4 times during the night) than other days. These 2 days just happened to both be non-cloudy days (a rarity here this spring and summer) and my wife and I just sat in the living room with no lights or TV on and let the setting sun light the room. We used very little artificial lighting before going to sleep.

Conversely, last night was a mess. I spent several hours in my "train room" (HO layout) under very bright cool lighting (misnomer - cool is actually higher degrees K) just before bed time. I had a terrible nights sleep and it took forever to get to sleep. When I think back, it has happened before when in my train room for long periods of time before going to bed.

Now, the question that raises is do I blame the lighting, or am I getting all wound up with the on going planning of the layout, as it is in the early building stages. I need to experiment and try spending time in the cool lighting without the train layout involved. Just relaxation in that lighting and see how the sleeping goes. Don't think I could do the inverse - setting sun light only in the train room. A bit too dark for that sort of task.

Well of course - that's what marketing is. Capitalism thrives on over hyping products.

Still, there is a scientific basis to their claims, as, and here comes another 100 post argument*, night shift workers have documented problems with the change caused by, presumably, the lighting issue. We have a natural rhythm and we can disrupt it to our detriment.

* (someone please find the documentation to support the night shift problems claim this time)

It is probably just the HO train motors emitting ozone from the arky sparky brushes. Ozone adds to free radicals, and this raises your adrenalin, even though you are not aware of it at the time. Also, do not look behind you while in the train room, because what you would see when you turn around is going to make itself invisible within milliseconds and wipe your short-term memory of the sight within another few milliseconds anyway (pure bull on my part).

If you are doing much of anything right before bed time, this is keeping your brain in problem-solving, hunter mode.

I like the Silk Lite ad. It seems to be straight-forward and to the point. Apparently, the research is real, and makes sense to me. Think about it - do you really ever have trouble sleeping when you go camping? At least, if not beset by bears, mosquitos, hard jagged rocks under your sleeping bag, etc, etc.

I wonder what these adjustable color temperature lights cost and where to get them?

Yes, but....I'm in planning/layout mode - not run mode. The motors aren't running, but the brain sure is. I tend to do plans, here and at work as well, and once in building stage, see much better ways of implementing the plan. I spend a month drawing the layout on a special train layout cad program, then, what happens once I start to build goes as follows:

No - the siding turnout shouldn't go there - much better over here - woah - mountain needs to be here - not there - hey, the station should be here on this end of town - not that one - and so on.

So the part about the brain running at bedtime is definitely true. That's why I suggested I try this with the cool white light, but just relaxing to see the effect on my sleep patterns. Actually, I'll have a tough time doing this with my cats around. They tend to be much more disruptive to sleep patterns than any Circadian rhythm.

Yes - I'm checking the local Home Depot regularly waiting for them to show up. Definitely need to try them.

What about those of us who prefer to be up all night and sleep most of the day?

Or those like myself that prefer to get up around noon and go to bed about 4 PM. Is there a bulb for us?
