Use the telephone to obtain quotations from scrap merchants.

#1 - Weigh the cables

#2 - Obtain the current price per weight

#3 - Multiply the weight times the price

Copper scrap is graded as to purity and size. Solid copper bus bars removed from switchgear, and heavy gage copper wire with no insulation are graded number one.

A lot of transformer wire is burned to remove the insulation, leaving thicker oxide layers that reduce the copper content. These are often graded number three.

a search

These guys can give you a guide.

Today is different from tomorrow so you need to calculate the date in.

Somebody more clever here can explain if you add or subtract it.

Call up a scrap yard (recycler) and ask them what are the different rates for the different classifications. Make sure you ask them if they have an insulation stripper machine and what difference is the price between insulated and bare copper.

When the copper is picked up or delivered for machine stripping make sure they give you an "as delivered" weight. When getting your money ask them the gross weight, the class of copper, net weight and the payout. If they strip by hand or send it out for stripping the same things although if shipped out for stripping you may not be able to get an "accurate" weight.

Most junk yards will weight it in your presence if asked. Make sure you have good identification when going for the money and read the fine print. When all is said and done make sure they give you a receipt. The more you know about the system the less you will have problems or be cheated. Although most are very honest this part of economics has some questionable owners and/or employees.

The best way to find a good one is to ask people who have used them. Also compare prices. Another way is to ask a local electrician or a plumber. They scrap all the time.

Good Luck, Old Salt

old salt,

Mourad Yahia is probably not familiar with the term "junk yard".

Algeria or Morocco probably use different languages than we do.

I'm guessing that's where he is from.

Does he take sugar?

Lyn writes: "old salt, Mourad Yahia is probably not familiar with the term "junk yard". Algeria or Morocco probably use different languages than we do. I'm guessing that's where he is from."

Is it just me or is it patronising to guess at someone else's difficulty in comprehension and then talk to others about that persons supposed difficulty whilst not addressing that person directly whilst they are still in the room?

If it is not patronising and the guess is fully accurate then would it not be better to explain that a scrap yard is a place where scrap or unwanted metal is disposed of - in short to actually offer the required explanation rather than simply commenting on a persons lack of comprehension?

The answer seems strangely specific about the geographic origin of names whilst at the same time being rather vague about languages used in those locations and seems to contribute little to any comprehension issues that may or may not exist.

You said, "then would it not be better to explain that a scrap yard is a place where scrap or unwanted metal is disposed of - in short to actually offer the required explanation rather than simply commenting on a persons lack of comprehension?"

Is it just me or is it patronising to guess at someone else's meaning and intentions, the criticize them for what you THINK they meant?

Is there any reason that you did not direct your definition of the terms in question to the OP instead of wasting everyone's time by directing your diatribe at me?

Call me patronizing, if you wish. Just don't do it by third person innuendo.

Cheers.

Years ago, our Electrician would save all of his cut offs, odd lengths etc, and put them in 55 gal. drums. He got the Plumbers to add their stuff too…. after he had no more room, he poured gas into the drums , lit them, burning off the insulation, and took the whole drum to the recycler. He paid for several firsts birthdays (Hispanic), and one Quinceanera that way… Now , regs prohibit that activity, but they were inventive...
