Water Water Everywhere, But Not A Drop To Drink! Looking for Judges!

07/17/2007 4:36 AM

I am looking for contest judges:
Ideal candidates will have an advanced knowledge in water purification, engineering, and or third world living conditions. Water chemistry and water purification experts highly desired. A background in civil engineering, environmental engineering, public health, medicine, and or chemistry are appreciated, as are accomplished carpenters, mechanics, plumbers, and machinists.

The Goal:
The goal is for teams and individuals from around the world to create a device capable of purifying enough water to sustain a family, within the living conditions and means of the third world.

Working conditions:
Work from home, looking at plans for a water purification method, made from inexpensive materials, and junk. And then forward all plans that show utility and merit. Final plans will be published in a manual. No pay, just honorable mention, and possibly a six pack. Your time is volunteered, your impact immense.

Contact:
adaminchains@att.net with a CV and a letter of intrest.

I'm not qualified I'm afraid, but I'm looking to do exactly the same in my garden in the UK, that is capturing rain water and recycling household waste water. I thought perhaps I could create some filtration beds, a lake and/or maybe some form of underground storage? I'd love to see some solutions. Yes, with the weather we've had this year you may well ask WHY????

Yours, Hugh Price

Interested. I am BSChE, have water purification, potable and waste water treatment experience; and live in Colombia, a third world country.

And, I have a similar background but have worked for and with large companies supplying filtration media and products to a wide range of industrial applications in the US and elsewhere. Our two backgrounds are complementary and synergistic.

Agree. This is an important part of the water treatment. You may I have some RO (reverse osmosis), and ion exchange resins experience as well.

Cool, I am still working on the tech specs for the filter, and what materials can be used freely, what materials have to be purchased etc. and how to judge costs. versus efectiveness for purity standards. Might have to figure out how to publish it on the web too.

I am retired, hold a doctorate in Chemical Engineering and have been working on water sourcing and purification projects in 3rd world settings as a volunteer for past 6 yrs since retirement. Prior to retirement, I handled research and technical operations on all manner of water and solution purification and cleanup priojects for a major steel producer.

I have the free time and inclination to assist on this . If you feel I would be suited for working on the project, please email me at:

Hi to all,

does anyone know how efficient the very simple method of water destillation is that is described in many "survival books":

dig a hole in wet or humid earth, put a small pot in the middle, cover the hole with a thin transparent plastic foil, put a small stone onto the foil at the location above the pot.

Wait until the sun will heat and evaporate the humidity, the foil will stay cool and condensation on the inner side of the foil will be captured in the pot.

At which surface area is this sufficient to deliver enough for one person?

(1 to 10 liter/day)

This should be used as a starting point in cost and production rate.

Then this should be compared to the technical advanced systems with reversed osmosis etc that are designed to produce around 100 cubic meter per day enough for a medium size hotel or hospital (embassies have smaller ones).

I can get a price quote for these systems.
