Difference Between Nuclear Energy and Atomic Energy

07/17/2007 12:54 PM

What is the difference between Nuclear Energy and Atomic Energy? I know they are same for me, but for you, how do you feel. India calls Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) as if they use Atom Bombs to generate energy and I think USA is clever to use name DOE. What are other names used for nuclear power? What will be the likely name for fusion energy?

What's the difference between information, knowledge and application. The problem is understanding.

Information is anything including newspaper and Internet stuff or lots of garbage. Know is something that is filtered and given value by the brain and stored for a purpose in the brain of intelligent beings. I can differentiate these but I do not know how and why those nuclear power and atomic power were coined and differ. I think it is all nuclear power or is it different?

well i think dkwarner almost got it, atomic energy is energy formed when fission takes place, and if a chain reaction is controlled and fissile nuclei are produced, neutrons can be trapped for energy. Nuclear energy intitiates when igniting the system takes place in a time shorter than the time it takes for a shock wave to propagate through the system. so nuclear energy requires ignition whereas atomic energy arises from a self-sustaining chain reaction. <p> fatima irvine, ca

All fission reactors use triggered nuclear reactions in a controlled way, so it is not simply the natural decay of atom. It is made to split by a hit of a neutron to the nucleus (using natural neutron source in an arrangement), so it should only be called a nuclear reactor I suppose. I think, they do use this word "nuclear reactor" then why not nuclear energy? Has any one noticed the use of the word "atomic reactor". In that case atoms will be like vegetable in a pot being cooked.

I believe the term atomic energy, at least originally, referred to energy produced only by fission, while nuclear energy refers to energy produced by fusion, or both fusion and fission.

Bush didn't find nuclear weapons in Iraq because he was looking for nucular weapons.
