Odd. Usually these launches are actually underwritten by an insurance company governed by the FAA.

However, I think NASA self-insures and that payload may be the actual loss to taxpayers.

Nobody ever said space exploration was cheap....

"NASA plans to spend $22 billion more from 2016 to 2020 on space station operations, according to the Government Accountability Office. More than half of that amount will go to pay SpaceX, Orbital and other contractors to transport cargo - and soon astronauts - to the space station, the GAO said."

You get that on the big jobs...

What's the US tax payer's loss....around 30 cents per head.

Less than a licked donut.

Lucky it was a lesson learnt on non self loading cargo.

Next one will be fine.
