What is This?

07/29/2015 8:14 AM

A coworker recently bought this at a hardware liquidation and he likes old tools and he paid $0.98 for this item because he was curious what it is...but we could not figure it out. Does anyone know what these would be used for? Shucks, I can't the pic to show up, maybe it will show up for you guys, I will try anyway, if it doesn't show up just delete the post please. Thanks.

Try loading the photo with a different browser, I.E. Firefox, Internet Explorer. I've had problems loading photos here when using Chrome.

Still a bad deal! Less than a dollar for a broken pic!

Now that's not fair! If you were using Internet Explorer when posting this, get Firefox and post the pic from there!

or vice-versa

He paid $.98 for a small box with some green pixels in it? Appears he got burned.

He bought a vacuum? I would have sold him the vacuum inside my head for $0.50 and I'm sure it is much larger.

A friend of mine says that when you post a link, you can just drill down until you find the content you're looking for. Hold on while I get my drill . . .

Slightly more seriously, I have problems when I try to post tiff files here. Is it a tiff file? If so, try converting it to jpg. I use Preview to do that.

Whoops, Andy just beat me to that. Still in time to edit and change it, so here's another suggestion. Sometimes I have tried pasting a pic into the editor, and the link is broken when I go to preview it. I have to use the camera icon to load the pic from the disk in order for the link to work. Does that help?

C'mon! Try again! I like old tools too...

As at least a couple of others have suggested, try a different browser, or a different image format.

Safari basically does not work with CR4 (or CR4 does not work with Safari). If you don't have the toolbar with the camera icon, you will have great difficulty loading an image.

It's the symbol that appears when you are trying to post a graphic that is not in an acceptable file type.....ie: jpg bmp gif

That's like the one my grandson brought to me some time ago. He spilt a drink on his laptop keyboard &, knowing it could damage it, pulled all of the key caps off to clean it then couldn't remember what order they were in.

I think the keyboard is a red herring, just a background.

Picture hasn't got enough resolution to see the stamped printing.

Looks like a bracket from some sort of assembly.

If it is attached to that keyboard then it looks like a mechanical guard to prevent pressing the keys of doom.

Pressing any of the shielded keys in any order at any time may have spelt disaster, or it just happens to be a random metal pressing sitting on a keyboard for a photo shoot and doesn't do squat.

What is stamped on that piece of metal?

A version of this....

Looks like a keyboard, probably for a Windows XP or later system, although it should work with earlier OSes as well...

Oh, you meant the plate sitting ON the keyboard. Not sure, it looks more like a cover plate for something than an actual tool. from that 'nose' protrusion and the notch-type styling above it, I'd guess that we're looking at what might be a 'strike plate' for some sort of latch, and we're looking at the back side. What does the other side look like?

The text that is stamped on the part is:

  • left side - STANLEY - MADE IS U.S.A. - PAT. PENDING
  • Right side - THIS SIDE TOWARDS USER

The keyboard was just to hold the part and provide some scale. It has nothing to do with the keyboard.

The writing states:

STANLEY

PATENT PENDING

THIS SIDE TOWARD USER

The square piece in the center looks like carbide.

Thanks Original Mac for the assistance.

It is pretty robust, looks like it is stamp formed out of 10 GA.

We initially thought it was some kind of sharpener.

Still don't have a clue.

The 'blade' piece in the middle seems to have a 90° notch in it (picture gets a bit fuzzy when I zoom in). Could be something like a laminate corner trimmer.

since Massey said the piece was square, I think the 'notch' is either the keys below, or a reflection thereof (as cnc J indicated). Also, if it is carbide, it would be pretty standard practice to be able to rotate it when one cutting edge gets worn.

I think you're close on the trimmer idea. I'd say a beveling or de-burring tool.

This was truly very difficult to find.

I found 2 of them for sale on some very obscure tool sales web sites.

One of them for $1.50 plus shipping and another for $15.00 plus shipping.

You are very welcome. I enjoyed this challenge!

I must admit.... I cheated!

I contacted Stanley directly and they sent me that information.

A hearty "BRAVO" to the customer support team at Stanley Tools!
