Looks like the thing you use to pull the bushing thing in the crankshaft thing that supports the pointy end of the transmission thing. You can also use a wooden dowel, some grease and a hammer or rock.

Adjustable nail puller.

First impression was same as Doggonit, but there seems no thinning to lead in nail heads.

Had an uncle once who commented that anything solid with mass when at hand could be used as a surrogate for a hammer.

So i think it's a possible hammer! (Though I know it's not.)

It appears that it is meant to be turned with the sleeves and the part on top to put a handle through. My guess is it is a tool to square off the bottom of a drilled hole (a reamer).

I think it is a home made tool for making inside threads in something. Those 2 "feet" on the bottom of the robot look like cutters to me.

I'm pretty sure that Wrench Twirler got it. It looks like a shop made tool for removing bearing races or seals.

• Possibly able to use it like a slide hammer?

It's a pilot bearing puller. turn the knob and the fingers spread to grab it. then give a yank. Sometimes called a blind hole puller.

Unless you have sasquatch fingernails, hydraulic lifters are difficult to get out.

Good answer , the previous owner thought it was an oil seal remover but that didn't sound right based on the claw movement range . Hydraulic lifter puller it is. :-)

It's an aftermarket hydraulic valve lifter removal tool. I have one in my tool box but it's many years since I needed to use it. The claws spread into the groove in the end of the lifter and screwing the shaft tighter, expands the claws to hold the lifter.
