How come guys that convert semi-auto into full auto get thrown in jail and these hackers get work?

If the hacker lived next-door would you hire him to repair your computer?

I think the theory is:

"Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer"

You HAVE to be a Gun Freak to even THINK about posing such a question.

Who needs a fully automatic weapon privately?

Dear Magnanimous Poster #1, you HAVE to be a Gun Freak to even THINK I was referring to firearms.

As to your question, ask Ted Nugent.

Finally, F off.

Unredundant

Don't let an AP get your goat. I understand where your thoughts are coming from.

In the 80's there was a book called "Full Auto" that had blueprints and diagrams that showed you how to machine certain parts to modify a firearm to operate in full auto mode. I used to have a copy and the parts I made were for a Motion Picture special effects team that had all the required FFL licenses.

P.S. If anyone is listening... ATF.. FBI.. Secret Service... I don't produce those parts anymore!

The ATF and Secret Service actually visited our machine shop in 1984 and found everything in order and there was no issue with what we were doing!

Granted: (at the time)

  • Owning the book was not illegal.
  • Making the parts was not illegal.
  • Owning the parts was not illegal.
  • Owning the firearm that the parts fit into was not illegal.
  • Installing the parts in said firearm was a visit from ATF and a quick trip to Federal prison. (unless you had the proper licenses)
  • Selling the parts is illegal. (unless you had the proper licenses)

Today, I wouldn't even want to posses the finished or even rough parts because I want no trouble from any authorities.

I am a law abiding citizen with knowledge that could get me in trouble and will not use that knowledge to harm anyone.

You cannot be charged with a crime because of the knowledge in your head unless you use it to break the law in whichever format you like, whether it be metal, plastic or digital binary code.

Personal responsibility!

People have been "Hacking" stuff for as long as the first wheel was invented. Building a better mouse trap is my ideology.

A hacker has the ability to compromise "secure" data bases. Corrupting a data base can cost a company millions to fix. Hacking I believe is not illegal. It's only when the data hacked is used in an illegal way. One way to combat hacking is to hire hackers and pay them well. The only way that could backfire is if the company hiring the hacker uses him(her) to hack the competition. Hacking could become a new skill to be taught in school. They would find employment with major companies and government for very high salaries.

You may not believe that it is illegal, but there's a whole body of law being developed around it, I suggest you check out this link for the laws of your state before you try it.

It's also a very old skill, and ethical (so-called "white hat") hackers have been available for hire since the dawn of the internet. It's not that hacking is hard, it's that some bozo doesn't submit their code for review until after the vulnerability is exploited by the bad guys, and then it's too late.

There are plenty of courses available, but unless you work really hard at it (and keep your hand on the "Ooops that's crossing the line button") you risk being caught and prosecuted. But the knowledge can have a legitimate payoff, United Airlines recently awarded 1,000,000 miles to each of the white hat folks who helped them uncover some vulnerabilities

Don't build a car that doesn't rely on the internet of everything to run.

How do I prevent a hacker from hacking me? Keep driving cars from the carbureted era. They still run very well. Maybe a bit tough on gas bills, but.....

I believe that if a manufacturer builds a product that involves human lives and lets that product access the internet, or vice versa, they are asking for trouble.

I say that the lawyers are salivating at the thought of a multi billion dollar class action lawsuit involving the IoT connections that are being tossed around like everything's OK!

As for hackers....

There are.... White hat hackers that work for the good of the software and hardware!

There are.... Black Hat Hackers that break into software illegally for some kind of gain!

Then you have your .... Script Kiddies that find some hacking code on a "Hacker" web site and then apply it to some random web site that they don't like to bring it down or disrupt the service or try to access an FBI or NSA server!

I have one question..... Who checks the "Hackers" integrity and actions? What if they decide to screw you and upload your secret Intellectual Property to Google Drive and share it with the world or sell it to your competitor?

Who will "Hack" the hackers when they control the servers for your company from inside your company?

In order to remain ahead of the curve you need people who are not trapped in the current way of thinking.
