Why do You Frequent CR4?

08/20/2015 2:28 PM

is it for intellectual camaraderie ? just checking in on the latest teaching of photon emission? we all have our reasons.

Originally I just showed up for the free popcorn, due to budget cutbacks or draught the freebie is gone I suppose I enjoy being a beachball. and what is your draw?

For me, it is primarily for the intellectual camaraderie that I find here. Even more, it is also from my desire to share the knowledge and experience that I have attained in my career, and learn from the varied experiences and vast knowledge resource that this community has to offer.

One of the primary reasons that I have continued here over the years is the fact that the community, in general, seems to appreciate my contributions. (and are quick to let me know when they don't)

Beats following what some celebrity eats for lunch each day on Twitter. Am I right?

<ppptf> I have plenty of other unproductive ways to pass the time that don't involve following what celebrities are wearing or doing.

Now if you will excuse me I have to go and read Lyn's latest CR4 post and check if Kulas has started a new thread.

A lifetime of engineering, means an active mind solving life's problems , so, just something as simple as what is it, and watching how some analyse, and how some approach problems is interesting.

For a long time I was what you call a "lurker" for a simple reason. I preferred to keep my mouth [keyboard] shut, and listen to what the community had to say. Only when I believed that I had something positive to add to a dialog would I enter the conversation. Once this community came to accept my contributions, I became more involved and vocal.

First, I found this place by searching (on the internet, a foreign concept to most) for a technical forum.

I had a question about my tires. Not sure that it got answered or not. Probably got good and not so good answers.

But, I discovered a cat, a squirrel and a gremlin who could type coherent sentences.

Seems there was a duck in there and no one can forget avatars like and

I learn something new every day here and enjoy (most of) the banter that comes with the regulars.

My wife wonders why I don't put this much time in at work.

Yes. SparkStation and JohnDG. SparkStation was out of Christchurch, right? Does anyone know what happened to him for sure?

I haven't noticed SparkStation for a while, but I think you're right about NZ. I believe John DG is still here from GB. Great posters both, and a big tip of the hat to JRaef, RAMConsult, MSamad, Winfield Hill, kvsridhar, and other electrical experts to whom I apologize for forgetting.

As some other have said, the intellectual camaraderie. Also because the people whose posts I look forward to, have earned their spurs by hard-core experience...an excellent way to enhance my own experience. And of course, the awesome learning. And, not to forget, the beautiful women :)

One reason I frequent CR4 is to kill spam. Zapping that nonsense is pretty satisfying. Maybe you have noticed the diminution of garbage. (Bow.)

I like it 'cos I can ask questions, answer questions, use my rapier wit and un petit peu of sarcasm too.
The banter is good natured generally and I learn stuff.

Classic example... that jerk line "what is it" post.... never seen one of them before. It all fuels the engineering imagination.

It's also a forum where I can show of stuff I've made and people 'get it' rather than staring blankly without understanding what they are seeing.

I like the kitty treats people give too

Intellectual camaraderie, curiousity, and give-back. I consider answering a really good question as a combination of Trivial Pursuit and Concentration, it's a way of jogging and refreshing the brain cells.

I also enjoy mentoring and sharing the real-life knowledge that I received through hands-on experience and research, since it is unlikely that many people will ever have the opportunity get as close to both the theoretical and practical aspects of power generation, delivery, and utilization as I have had.

It's also a very interesting jig-saw puzzle, trying to accurately decipher what a poster who is not a techie or native English-speaker is trying to convey when his translation program lacks any form of engineering vocabulary. And maybe, just maybe, through some of our strong Draconian warnings, we might actually prevent a poster or his coworkers from being a victim of their own naivete and there will be one less Darwin Award presented posthumously this year.

Nicely said. Those have been my motivations as well, even though I walk a lot on the banter side.

Intellectual simulation, intellectual stimulation and the opportunity to learn new ways to be snarky ideas!

I come here for the collective knowledge. I stay for the snark-fest. Sometimes I'm laughing at my desk so hard, people around me come over and ask what is so funny. Most of the time they don't get it, which makes me feel superior. I love that no one seems to get their panties in a wad when they are a target like other message boards.

I am a commercial airline pilot.

CR4 helps me to occupy the boring hours in the air between those short periods of shear panic when we are taking off and landing.

I am really fond of some of the regulars who call things the way the see them.

They are my heroes!

A few reasons:

1 - to learn - even after all my years, I still don't know it all

2 - to advise/teach - there are threads where I can actually have some input, a little advice to someone who needs a little help, or may be going down a wrong path-one I have been down before.

3 - a little humor

4 - hey, it shows up in my inbox every day☼↑→

Dear Mr.KevinLaPaire,

I fully concur with your statement, which has come to my mind also.

In addition to this (your) statement, I want to add 5th and 6th Point as below.

5. We have to contribute to the Society more than what we have receieved from the society which has strengthened you and became more rich by knowledge. CR4 Forum is one source we pass on the benifit of knowledge and also acquire knowledge.

6. The experience is shared by contributing members which will be more helpful since Experience is the best teacher.

Your point about contributing more to society is very valid. Just look at how many people all over the world do not contribute, only take. Far too many of those around.
