You can only follow the paths that life presents to you. There are a lucky and celebrated few in every profession that get the opportunity to pursue their desires. Most of these individuals didn't start their career in their desired discipline. So keep your eyes open for a possible way to use your instrumentation skills both at work and outside of work.

You said you were an instrumentation professional. I would expect that you have some credentials to make that claim.

An entry level technical position may be what you are looking for, in which case you need to apply for advertised jobs as Lynn suggested or go door knocking.

During your 4 years away from the instrumentation field what were you doing?

Certifications.....? Start with the one I think you have. The job place, not the generic market, will determine whether you need other certification.

So, is Hill Int involved in any projects that have an instrumentation component to them?

You are an expat in Oman now, what next? Back to India? Hill Int have an office in Mumbai.....

Is any of the documentation that you are presently QA/QCing in any way remotely related to instrumentation?

Do you go out into the field at all?

Hill international is a construction project management firm and most projects are civil constructions. i had a hope when i was there in Development of Airports in sultanate of Oman project, but unfortunately they shifted me to another road project. That means, now there is no relation with instrumentation field.I cant leave my job before finding a new one, so i have to hunt from here in Oman itself. But because of god's grace and my passion to this field the training that i had before is still in my mind and i will refresh it again for the new battle.
Let me clear why did you ask about Mumbai?.

A modern road project has a large instrumentation component.

Load cells, automated lane changing, warning lights, variable message signage, surveilance, comms ....

You may not have to change employers.

Mumbai? If you return to India then your current employer may have a job for you in or around Mumbai. They have a website.

You are only 4 years into your working life, be patient and be open to alternatives.

You are right Mr.Wal, but in this project Hill intl Acting as the project manager and my access to the work site is very limited as i am an office personal.

My annual leave is coming in after two months,so i am thinking to do something in instrumentation field like traning, certifications etc . so that i can highlight it when i start the hunting. otherwise i have to face the question from the interviewer " what you did in last 4 years ??" when i attend an interview.

Its just my Planning only and i dont know how much it is valuated.

The fact that you've been working for the past four years is far more important in the interview than you working in any part of instrumentation. Stop over analyzing. [I know, engineers are supposed to analyze.]

Continuing your education is always a good idea. Looking for the opportunity to move to your engineering preference is also good. After that, you're on your own.

Good Luck

All starts with imagination. I have lots too and never run out dry.

Work your way up because of your passion regardless of shitty bosses, directives and returns.

Everything changes when you raise a family, you might change your objectives.

You're in the wrong place. You really need to get your cv in front of recruitment consultants that specialise in this sort of thing. I'm not going to do that for you as that might make you lazy and we don't want that, do we?

You can make up the lost 4 years behind you with next 4 years in front of you.

There's no shortcut for experience and that experience will decide for you what specialised formal courses you will endure.

What ever type of instrumentation job you would have been qualified for and taken 4 years ago is the type of job you should be looking for now.
