Why Have To Use Insulated Bearing in VFD Motors?

09/09/2015 9:19 PM

We just got another failure motor. They suggested to use Insulated Bearing.

Why have to use insulated bearing in VFD motors?

For Insulated bearings, must use famous brand ones like SKF, FAG, NTN?

Or can choose to buy from a Insulated bearing manufacturer, JXKJ, Nine Star Bearing?

Any one can give suggestion? Thank you.

You can choose high quality or cheap price.

The difference is down time when you have to replace cheap bearings much more often than high quality bearings.

Look at the big picture.

You get what you pay for.

Yes, but have control a little bit on your attitude on posting. Some people might not be able to appreciate and consider it post worthy and you will be banned from here.

A nice day to you.

Are you the manufacturer or the consumer of said motors? The choice is relatively easy; just calculate the cost of maintenance, downtime, lost production, etc., basically any measure you care to use to determine the cost attributable to a bearing failure. You can offer/buy on best price or best performance and let the counterparty decide. Which would you choose?

That's really a reasonable suggestion for this issue. Calculating and comparing, thank you for your massage. Nice day and Regards, Lisa.

Depending on the size of the motor, shaft grounding may be a cheaper and more effective option, and should be considered as your first line of defence in any case as you may simply be transferring the problem elsewhere if you only insulate the bearings. Both grounding and insulated bearings should be considered for motors larger than 100hp

How big or many hp is your motor? This makes no sense to me if it is a small motor, most motor suppliers already use EMB bearings in the motors with a C0 clearance. A VFD should have no effect on the bearings if everything is grounded correctly.

Granted that the bearings are the weak point on motors as well as reducers but if you are no putting too much load on the shaft, the bearings are designed not to fail.

Dear Mr. Lisa Chen,

We have to use INSULATED BEARING or insulation for bearing for VFD motors.

This topic discussed earlier in this forum.

Search for this topic in this forum and you will get plenty of advise.

Friction and windage losses are caused by friction in the bearings of the motor. By having Insulated bearing we can significantly reduce the losses and thus attribute towards more energy efficiency.

Hello there,to my person:Im working since 25 years in the test department of a company, which overhauled and renewed electric motors and generators.Insulated bearings are needed in order to avoid unwanted wave currents and related bearing damage.Magnetic technically related asymmetries in statorcore and the variable frequencies producing high equalizing currents. That current flows between the housing and the shaft through the bearings.the bearings will be destroyed at the contact surfaces of the bearing balls by the current flow.In Germany we normally isolate both bearings on vfd motors.

This is the first time I heard about the electrical motor failure and they need to use insulated bearing. Never heard these things before and further more what is the difference between the normal bearing and the insulated bearing???
