Camera Download

09/14/2015 9:31 AM

Last spring i purchased a new computer (hp pavilion slimline 400) It had win 8.1 os but I have since installed win10. for some reason the computer will not recognize My camera (nikon coolpix). Weather I use the download cable or weather I take the memory card and plug directly into the computer. My old computer (went south) was also an hp pavilion running vista had no problem downloading pics from the nikon. My question is, is it the computer or the camera? I was able to download a few pics when the computer was new but then that abruptly stopped while I still was running win 8.1.camera still takes great pics with no problems.

You might try going to the Nikon website and downloading the latest version of NX2 or whatever Nikon software your camera takes. I've got the Nikon D5100 and NX2 is the software my PC uses to read the image files off the SD card. The coolpix likely uses a similar program, if not the same one. The Nikon website should tell you.

Addendum. The software I use is ViewNX2. It's a free dowload.

Here's the link. It says it supports all Nikon cameras.

Unfortunately they don't support the L20 which I have. "software not available if camera is not listed" and its not listed.

Are you sure?

At the link it says, "ViewNX 2 is an all-in-one application for image transfer*, browsing, sorting, and quick editing for both still images and movie files. It is a fun and easy-to-use application offering enhanced operation and is useful for all Nikon digital camera owners." (My emphasis.)

It might not allow direct download from your camera, but it should read your SD card. If your PC doesn't have an SD slot, you can get an SD to USB connector.

FWIW, I just used ViewNX2 to read an old SD card from a Canon camera I haven't used in 5 years. It downloaded the photos with no problem. (My PC has an SD card slot.)

My computer also has an sd slot but for some reason its not reading my card. Like i said earlier when I first got the computer I was able to download the pics directly from the card but for some reason it will not do it anymore. As I told solareagle I'm 90% sure I have a bad usb port on the camera but that does not account for the card not being read when I plug it into the computer. Thanks for the tip on "viewNX2" app I will certainly try it when I get the camera figured out.

It might be worthwhile getting an SD to USB adapter. They're inexpensive.

This one from Amazon is only $11, and can handle different sizes of SD cards. You can probably find one even cheaper elsewhere.

Went to the sight and found a few examples that fit My camera. It seems to be a bad usb port on the camera. I'm going to have to do some more checking but I'm 90% sure thats what it is. thanks for the tip.

...but why is the SD card also not read in the computer?

M personal guess, unless you are able to use other USB devices with no problems, it is the PC!

Also, some older devices (your camera maybe?) seem to not like being a USB2.0 device on a USB3.0 port.....My Canon printers and scanner for example....I have no explanation though.....

My Toshiba has both 2.0 and 3.0 sockets, so it was not really a problem......

I once had a problem with USB ports not working at all that I could only fix by reloading windows. I tried everything else first, nothing helped!!

I would try to use the camera and the SD card on other PCs as a start.....that may help with locating the problems.

On both my Photo camera and video camera, I do have to "accept" the computer connection, on the camera itself, or they will not be seen....

If the USB ports are otherwise OK with any external hard disks for example, may I suggest that you buy say a USB3.0 memory card adapter and plug the SD card into that....(I am assuming that you have USB3.0, which of course may not be true....)

Also, a 3.0 port replicator/bus expander may also help!

Best of luck.....

I just re-read your post. It seems your problem may be weather-related !

It sounds like an SD card failure. That happens.

Try a new card, format as per Nikon's directions, and take some test shots.

If that works you might look at getting some recovery software for your unreadable SD card and try that to get back your pictures.

I don't have a CoolPix, but the files are standard JPEG and any computer will read them. That's why I think your card is bad.

Its worth a try, But I can still get the pics on the camera lcd. I don't know all the workings of camera/computer but I will certainly give it a go. Now all I have to do is find another computer! just kidding!

Thanks

Ahh... did you try it on a different computer? Kind of the first place to start.

You can roll back to 8.1 for 30 days. I would try that if possible. Another thread here talks about Win 10 problems like you have.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in with possible fix for downloading pics from My camera. Solved the problem! Camera went "Kaput" Will no longer turn on. Green on light comes on , screen comes on for about 1/2 sec then goes blank shutter lens does not open or extend. Put fresh batteries in still same thing. Probably could be fixed but this gives Me an excuse to get a new camera. Had this one for quite sometime.
