You can probably search the mercedes club site and find all the info you need....from what I understand the controls are the weak points...but there are several...

If the damper positioners are vacuum operated you most likely have a bad vacuum leak. Check the canister for holes and EGR valve failure.

A 30 year old car probably has bad vacuum lines. The diaphram may also be bad.

For its day, that was one of the best cars around, even today its pretty good, though I haven't driven one for more than 20 years.....

Parts are usually available here in Germany still, though I have no idea if they are available where you are....

Even in the 80's I used to bring parts for a friend of mine when I traveled to the states, but that may have been more price difference orientated then....I forget.....

If my car's A/C system was low on Freon, it would run reasonably cold, until the system detected it was too low on the low pressure side. Then the electrical signal to the compressor would be interrupted, and the compressor would disengage, and the A/C system would be blowing hot air. When the low pressure started to rise again from the disengaged compressor, the low pressure switch would again close and allow the compressor clutch to engage. And the system would start to cool the car again.

Repeat............Repeat....

But that is just my car, not necessarily your car.
