I've found that when doing math using the numerical system exclusively rather than the alphabet or trying to mix and match them works best.

Like 1 + 5 = 6

Where as A + 6 = Potato doesn't really solve much. Sure it looks clever to the uneducated but really it doesn't solve anything.

Forget about i for a minute.

Ask yourself what value of N or d will balance the equation.

One potato, two potato, three potato, four?

He'll find the value if he just tries.

∀ i : N=0, ε=0, d=0 are solutions.

Use excel, then tabulate formula and drag that thing until you find zero (whatever your N and d values are) it goes something like this

or you may study logarithmic properties. But above is easier.

How about sqrt(-1)=i instead?

That's better! sqrt(i) = (1 + i)/√2

No, it's i=sqrt(-1) (you forgot to italicize i )

Re: Solution to Equation

If you think about imaginary values then i= sqrt(-1) so that the relationship is i²=-1.

At least it is what I remember from what I learned many many years ago.

But may be I am wrong.

There are sooo many new things in mathematics that the old I learned could be not any more valid.

No, you, (and Crabtree, and Codemaster) are right and I had it backwards!

Where did you find this equation?

Re: Solution to Equation

You certainly are problematic . How do you expect to solve an equation which has 4 unknowns? Conventionally i is defined as √-1 (though it need not be in your case).

If it helps, N(i-1) = Ni*N-1 = Ni/N and d2i = (d2)i = (di)2.

Re: Solution to Equation

Being an solutionmatic I have found that when the equation requires a number larger than 10 you can double your capacity by taking off your shoes and counting with the fingers and toes, not just the fingers. If you want to be inconspicuous about it, wear sandals and no socks.

If this doesn't work with larger formulas, invite some friends to help you solve it. Every additional person is an increase in the possible answer by 20. Don't invite anyone who has had some fingers or toes amputated. This will automatically give you a wrong answer. Also don't forget to count the pointer finger which is counting the other digits.

Good Luck, Old Salt
