Power Supply to Liebherr Tower Crane

11/04/2015 12:34 AM

I want to supply power to a tower crane (power requirements: 380V, 50HZ) via a 350KVA standby generator. The tower crane connected load is 217KVA. The manufacturer advised to introduce a site distribution panel (to serve as intermediate between the gen-set and the tower crane main switchboard cabinet. The manufacturer also advised to wire the site distribution panel by interconnecting a RESIDUAL CURRENT PROTECTIVE DEVICE with TT-NETWORK with LINE PROTECTION SWITCH (or ADJUSTABLE POWER SWITCH or ADJUSTABLE MOTOR PROTECTION SWITCH or LINE PROTECTION FUSES). The manufacturer also recommended to install OVERVOLTAGE ARRESTERS at the mains supply connection. How can these components listed above be installed and interconnected in the site distribution panel to link the Gen-set and the Tower Crane main switchboard cabinet? Please explain using a sketch.

Your in over your head there buddy. Stop where your at on this project and hire a qualified engineer and or electrician before you kill yourself, the crane operator or some innocent passer-by.

The devices are "in-addition-to" components that are separate to the distribution panel.

These types of devices are not ever mounted in a distribution panel.

The only protection device allowed in the distribution panel is circuit breakers which depending on design limitations, might be capable of providing ground fault protection in addition to standard overcurrent fault protection.

The distribution breaker(s) are configured and sized for protecting the downstream conductors attached to the breaker and are not for motor or other equipment protection.

"These types of devices are not ever mounted in a distribution panel."

That depends on what codes or regulations you're working to. Liebherr are a German company, TT supplies on building sites a european ruling.

I don't think we'll hear from the OP again.

"I don't think we'll hear from the OP again."

I agree, this looks like the typical "less-than-qualified person asking a question that reveals his complete lack of required skills for his position, then fleeing the site when he is immediately called on it by the site members" scenario.

If I had a cup of coffee for every time that scenario happens here, I would literally be drowning in the stuff. I'm talking floating face-down in an Olympic-sized pool of hot, brown java.

It is not possible to sketch the hiring of a qualified Consultant to carry out the design work required. It is possible to find organisations that will do this sort of thing in the telephone directory, particularly Yellow Pages. Get dialling, and talk to them.

Liebherr has an engineering dep't which is familiar with the requirements of their equipment. I suggest that you contact them, tell them what your power source will be and ask them to design your connections. They ARE the experts.

It's hard to do this by a sketch, since the steps are all verbal:

  1. Contact your supervisor, inform him that he has hired the wrong person for the job, and that you are tendering your resignation effective immediately so as to prevent any property damage or loss of life that the company would be liable for.
  2. If you are still interested in Electrical Engineering, contact the local community college and ask for a career adviser, that person can help you better than an annonymous bunch of people on the internet.
