Go to B&B Electronics. They have USB to RS232 converters.

I had this problem with a Telemechanique Zelio PLC. It turned out that the Zelio wouldn't communicate using a standard USB to RS232 bridge and Telemechanique made the own "special" USB bridge which cost about 10 times that of one off the shelf.

Contact the manufacturers and see if this is the case. Alternatively get a laptop with a serial port

Radio Shack sells a USB to RS232 converter that works Ok with the Zelio PLC. I use it every day.

My mouse (or is it my keyboard?) uses a USB to RS232 convertor, they are given away with a box of cereal these days!

Electroman, I think what you may be referring to is a USB to PS2 adapter, which is a passive device. USB to RS-232 will take an active converter.

You can buy it (search the Google for "USB to RS232") or you can build it:

An other way: convert an old PCMCIA modem to serial (RS232) port:

I have not had a problem but I did have the need for USB to serial for AB products. Allen-Bradley now sells its own USB to serial adapter, again its way more expensive then what it should be but what may make it worth it is that it is an AB part numbered device and guarenteed to work with AB products. So if you have a problem tech support SHOULD help you work through it although it has worked flawlessly for me so far. The part number is 9300-USBS.

Mitsubishi uses a proprietary cable to communicate with its devices.

There is another solution, http://www.quatach.com for a PCMCIA interface card for older products that require a 5 volt reference signal or actual RS232 serial port vs.USB emulator port.

I have use it to talk to AB, Siemens, and older RS232 products, ect.; that require a physical port with a 5volt signal through the serial port. It may be alittle pricey but will work with any notebook that has available PCMCIA slot.

Hi nam70,

Is this the sort of converter you are looking for? These sort are available locally (New Zealand & Australia) for around $10. Another version is packaged with an additional DB9 to 25 pin adapter for around $20.

Using these on our SCADA applications on a PC with a number of USB ports, you may find that each time you use a different USB port, it will be allocated a different COM port and the software application needs to be re-directed to the corrct COM port. When you have reached and gone above COM 9, the port is not visible and you will need to edit the registry to delete previous (non-used) ones.
