Traffic logic

07/26/2007 11:04 AM

When your trying to get anywhere in a hurry by car there is always something slow in front a wagon, tractor, tanker, caravan or even a car with a phantom caravan travelling at caravan speed which I have noticed is 43.2 mph. Now when one of these turn off and you start to speed up sure enough another pulls on in front or someone in front stops to let one out when they do not have the right of way. Is it not about time we had a passing regulation as there are times when I believe some of these nincompoops do this just to see how long the que can get behind them. I have even seen tractor drivers who come out at rush hour time and passing a friend actually wave and laugh in passing and use their mobile phones with impunity.

I think this logic also holds true for the grocery store checkout line. No matter which line you choose the one that looked longer will move faster, but if you are to change and select that one it will immediately stop moving and the one you were in will start moving faster.

You can prove mathematically that the other lane is usually faster. It has to do with the fact that you spend more time in the slower lane ... because it's slower!

Oh I shall not rant. I shall not rant. I shall not rant I shall not rant.

Some states (Oregon, Louisiana) have enforceble laws regarding the impedence of traffic in our left (passing) lanes. Here in Texas I just don't understand. It is a social blight. People act horribly in their little insulated micro-environs. I once was arrested for pulling some young men out of their car, through a closed window. They were behaving so poorly. And likewise I, a trained fighter, was so out of control I behaved in an unspeakable way. The unending abuse of privelege as well as the response it invokes is baffling. There is a social study long overdue.

I have taken a position of 'watch and whistle'. I drive the speed, obey the laws, allow the Jack-holes to be themselves. I get where I'm going, assured I have been socially responsible. I am all I can control, and at times that is more than enough. It has actually become great fun to watch the little old ladies flip off the rednecks while the punk rockers piss of the businessmen!

Perhaps this should fall in the 'Social Engineering' category. Or we could design Pulsar blasters to vaporize the buggers!

Hi C. Rummel3,

You said "I once was arrested for pulling some young men out of their car, through a closed window".

How in the world did you do that?

Cheers

one must first open the window agreed. I chose to open it from the outside, bare handed. A most impressive feat under different circumstances, if I do say so myself. Alas at this moment of reference, it was most shameful.

GIS and GPS people rave about of the possibility to be able to select the quickest route from A to B. The first time you try it out usually happens on the day they are experiencing exceptional problems. A GPS solution even had me traveling on a road where the bridge was washed away 2 years ago.

Conclusion There are no logic in traffic logic.

I always plan my trips on the assumption that I'll be going 43.2 mph. If that turns out to be the case, then all is well. If it happens that I manage do a little better, it's a special treat.

When you expect an optimal solution to a problem you will invariably be disappointed.

The logic in traffic is "S..t will happen" therefore rather leave early.

Yup! Then you get the convoy nuts horse box, tanker, steel wagon gravel wagon in any combination. But the most annoying is the guy in the auto who could do 100 mph but just likes sniffing up the truck or bus in front and has no intention of passing while teaching everyone behind his driving skills.

Talk about something slow in front, I was once driving along a 2-lane NJ highway in the boonies when I became last in a line of about 20 vehicles moving at about 12 mph. Only a few were able to pass the moving obstruction so it took me nearly 15 minutes to see that the problem was a car with no right rear tire but a SKATE BOARD lashed onto the wheel!
