Finally a Good Use for Drones

01/08/2016 1:54 AM

Rio lifeguards now using drones with life preservers to prevent drowning

" Rio de Janeiro firefighters are beginning to use drones equipped with cameras and with life preservers for quicker rescues and to prevent people from drowning at crowded beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana, authorities said Tuesday.

The drone's camera will be able to transmit the exact position of a person in danger, and its flotation device can be dropped so "the possible victim can stay on the surface of the water until lifeguards arrive," the commander of the Copacabana Maritime Association, Lt. Col. Fernando Santos, said.

The small, unmanned aircraft will allow paramedics working on the beach as lifeguards to spot possible victims beyond the breaking waves, Santos said in a statement released Tuesday by the government of Rio de Janeiro state."...

So, prior to this drones were only used for nefarious purposes?

Like the cool portraits taken for our new guests coming across the boarder?

Or the ones already used for hurricane hunting...

Or the ones already used for geological 2D/3D mapping...

Or the those used for wildfire control...

Or the ones already used by power companies to inspect HV lines...

Or the ones already used for wildlife protection and management...

Or those already used by farmers...

Or those used for oil exploration (oops, oil is a dirty word)...

Or the ones already used for SAR (Search And Rescue).

These would examples of bad uses, I guess?

This is a good use, but I can think of a lot of other good uses. Granted this device has been misused by some just as most other devices have.

They are also beginning to use them in Search and Rescue operations.

Finally a good use - so you don't think that using them in place of a small team of commandos to take down terrorists, who have and will later cause death, is not a good use? Don't argue about the "mistaken identity" issue, because humans in a potentially dangerous situation can err too. When in doubt they shoot first and ask questions later.
