You do realize, do you not, that:

Android is a "port" of Linux

Android is designed by Google (who own Android) to NOT be run in "host" mode

(which is/would be required in order to support keyboards and mice, as well as external hard drives).

If I'm wrong about that, please inform me, as I know the "pad" on which I run Linux is NOT setup to run Host Mode, and I don't know how to make it do so. I can manage the power requirements for my external drives (how I'd LOVE to be able to use them on my pad) via a USB hub with external wall-wart plug in, but the problem so far is that my fat fingers cannot adequately process data onto/out of my pad, since I have to use that little tiny virtual keyboard and no mouse.

I used to have a working laptop, till the power input module fried. Now I have to use my tower, to get keyboard/mouse access, and my pad for any portability. Putting data directly on the pad and manipulating it with a normal I/O devices would be wonderful.

BTW, the pad is a NextBook. I will provide the version of Android I'm running and any particulars needed if any of you have an answer.

Actually, my Samsung Galaxy S3 has the ability to be run in host mode, on the micro USB port. My wife's Lucid phone does not have that capability, so it is up to the manufacturer, and the flavor of Android OS used.

I bought an OTG cable from Amazon a few years ago: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GM0OZ4O?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

That allows me to hook-up a full sized keyboard, or an external USB hard drive to my phone.

And that is where my scheme fails, so far. I have what I was sold as an OTG cable, but it does not work with my Visio Phone, nor my NextBook pad.

No surprise to those of us who didn't trust Microsnot and Bill Gates to begin with. I think our "paranoia" was described as "hilarious" in another post. I castigated the poster there and called him a shill for Microsoft. I wonder how he feels now? Paid? Maybe. Or maybe a little chagrin, if he hasn't sold out body and soul to them?

Sounds right to me, although I'll just take an Iced Tea (I'm a tee-totaller, but you do your thing). Next item of business. Two actually. How much do we charge for dues?

And can we get someone on the crew who can hack MicroSnot's accounts? After all, we hate his products, and keep getting told he is the richest guy in the world because of those products, or some such. Let's let him share with the rest of us.

BTW, someone said this move on his part will backfire. I seem to remember Bonn, Germany rebelling against one of his "oh, your government-wide licenses have expired and we need to re-license you" schemes, and moving in the direction of an enterprise Linux solution. According to the articles, as Bonn goes, IT-wise, so goes most of Germany. Susi Linux won the competition, last I heard, but does anyone else have any more info on it? I lost track.

Maybe the rest of the government/corporate world will leave him, too. THAT would fall under the heading of "Delicious Irony", no?

"And can we get someone on the crew who can hack MicroSnot's accounts?"

I've heard it said, that the more sophisticated the system, the more vulnerable it is to "brute force attack"

Will this do?

Re: Microsoft Says New Processors Will Only Work With Windows 10

So, we still have two problems, even should we merrily buy into the New World Order of Micro...

1. Old pre-10 software/apps of as far back as MS-DOS for which we have CD's or whatever that we can install all day long on XP without difficulty so that we can bring up ancient files for review, refreshing, etc., but such software/apps slams into a stone wall with 10.

2. The three's the limit crew who require on-line activation, even if we are reinstalling on a wiped clean or new hard drive on the same computer with the same (old) operating system reinstalled, meaning that even were we using XP or whatever of bygone era, we are screwed by the guys to whom we paid full retail price for their software, and who demand that we upgrade just to use that with which we have been quite contented for a decade or two.

In the case of 1., above, we have just the Micro...obstacle. With 2, above, Micro...and their greedy developers are in bed together. How do we mount a guerrilla operation to deal with 1. and 2.?

BINGO!

And I note, ironically, that while I was reading IanR's question (Rhetorical, I hope?) the latest "I am Java, update me now" message just arrived again, with the statement that "Well (audible sniff of disdain), if you must, you CAN do this, but I'll only work correctly with Windows 10".

Java the Hut developers already got in bed with MS, I guess.

Linux time!!

I'm leaving on a week's vacation today. When I get back, I suspect installing Linux is the first order of business. Dual boot for now, but only for now. Anyone like to recommend a particular Distro/Flavor of Linux for me?

Re: Microsoft Says New Processors Will Only Work With Windows 10

I just helped my son build a new gaming PC (3.7GHz, Quad core, all MSI goodies) He said he still has to save up for a copy of 10, to finish his computer, and I am trying to talk him out of it. I convinced him to let me install a copy of Linux Mint 17.1 (Rebecca) on it. That way he would have an OS to play with, in the meant time. I am hoping that he can find enough to compatible software that he will forgo the Microsoftrocity and stay with Linux. He just downloaded a Linux version of Java as well as Steam. I am hopeful that he will not make the MSstake of polluting his system with that 10 garbage.

Personally, I just purchased another HP laptop, the other day. It came with 10 preinstalled, ugh. I had it wiped and Linux Mint installed and running, before the battery completed it's first full charge.

As for the flavor of Linux, I would recommend Linux Mint. It is based on Debian and Ubuntu. So, there is a plethora of packages and software out there for it. I personally use the Cinammon desktop environment. It has a very windows-esque GUI so it is rather intuitive and not too much of a culture shock, coming from the Pre-Win8, MS environment.

Thank you. Mint has been recommended strongly in the past. As far as my accepting Wiin10 goes, it just ain't happening. I shut off all updates on my laptop, then ran a recommended utility on it, to find and remove 52+ MB of MS10 prep files. Less than two weeks later the power input stage on my laptop fried.

Might be (probably is) coincidental, but I don't have to like it, and it seems like a good reason to complete the move to Linux on my next laptop.

Power input stage fried? Well, I suppose there may have been some MS based power management utility, that got removed but, I have never personally heard of such a thing. Just out of curiosity, what kind of laptop was it? I have an assortment of them in my family, around ten, I think. Mostly Toshiba and HP, but there is also a Dell, and an Acer. A few of them are still running various versions of windose, (only one of mine, and it's a dual boot Win7/Mint machine). The rest have all been changed over to various versions of Linux. (mostly Mint but, I play with a few other distros for fun) and I have never had a power issue on any of them. Well, the Acer refuses to power up now but, that one is a Windows only machine. My daughter picked it up at college, without my input. ;-)

As the singer named after a popular middle-class dinner(1) said, "You took the words right out of my mouth..(2)" I was going to recommend Linux Mint w/ Cinnamon desktop as well.

Notes:

  1. He had that hit album Bat out of Hell, then celebrated by having a nervous breakdown and not doing ANYTHING musical for something like five years.
  2. Not continuing that line here, in this context it would just be weird. I like Ian, but not in THAT way.

Exactly, Meat Loaf, and Jim Steinman, who together gave us a completely new type of music; more bombastic than Rock & Roll, more melodious than Heavy Metal, they blended Opera and Rock into something that few writers or singers can duplicate. They gave us Vagner Rock.

I've vet to find anyone who can write music like Steinman, and few singers in the music industry have the pipe to really do justice to Steinman's Vagner Rock; The two that come to mind right away are Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler.

For anyone who has not listened to it yet, I strongly recommend listening to the album Bat out of Hell, it's just so moving.

The singer is Meat Loaf, the song is You took the Words Right out of My Mouth, and the lyrics in the chorus go "You took the words right out of my mouth, oh it must have been while you were kissing my. You took the words right out of my mouth, oh I swear it's true, I was just about to say I love you. (loooove yoooou)." That's why completing the chorus would make it feel weird.

I love his songs, and that phrase, common though it may be, always brings that particular song to the forefront of my thoughts whenever I say it or hear it.
