Making Hole For Mounting Stud Vibration Sensor On Motor

01/18/2016 2:12 AM

good day

to improve accuracy of the casing offline vibration measurements / collection.

we are planning to change the mounting method of the vibration on the motors from 2 pole magnetic to stud or welding or adhesive.

my questions are

1- can we make small holes on the motors to mount the vibration sensors? is there any problem of making hole on induction motors? is there any standard prevent making holes on motor?

2- can we make welding on the casing of the motors? any problem of making this? is there any standards prevent this job?

3- do you have any idea or articles or best practice maybe it can help me on my issue?

best regards

You need to get quite a bit farther away than the mere middle of nowhere.

If the motor has a lifting eye, unscrew that and there's a ready made tapped hole. Any decent fitter will make an adaptor for you.

Don't loose the lifting eye or any alignment shims, you may need them again.

If the lifting eye is to be covered by the facility's lifting equipment failure indemnity insurance cover, then it may need to be identified, catalogued and added to the facility's General Register.

If it is not needed, then for insurance purposes it would be best destroyed.

I would suspect that positioning of the sensor is important, that the amount of vibration varies from one position to another. Unless I knew the best position for the sensor, I would opt for a non-permanent attachment so that it could be moved.

<...is there any problem of making hole on induction motors?...>

How about:

  • Epoxy resin adhesive?
  • Cyanoacrylate adhesive?

Then, the integrity of the motor itself is not compromised.

There is no problem making a hole on the housing, but the motor itself?

I think you know the answer already.

If the casing is made from cast iron, I wouldn't touch it with a welder...
