Needed: One Honest Geo-Tech With Guts

01/18/2016 9:08 PM

I'm seeking an honest, gutsy, geo-tech engineer that will do a forensic report on a landslide, keeping the client's interests in mind and not those of a municipality or insurance company. Location: Western Washington. May involve some sort of legal action in the future. I will provide details privately to individuals interested. I am also looking for one to discuss possible damage remediation steps. Structural Engineer?

In other words, a favorable bias towards your client. Drop the word 'honest' out from your requirement.

I don't necessarily see a conflict with honesty here.....an honest representation can come from more than one point of view...A competent professional should be able to argue either side in an honest manner...Your honest opinion is subjective in nature, not definitive...

That's an opinion then, and its my opinion that when you take this "keeping the client's interests in mind and not those of a municipality or insurance company. Location:"

That is a biased assertion. Well, it depends on who is paying you. For myself, its my opinion that an unbiased forensic report would be honest as well as with a high degree of integrity.

But this post sounds like someone is hiring and already trying to form the results.

it may be just me, but I hold integrity in high regard.

Keep looking. Shysters are easy to find, quacks not quite so easy, and engineering charlatans even harder still. But there are some.

CR4 is not the correct place to be looking.

  • It would be better to try local trade directories in the area of interest.
  • Another source of information is the telephone directory, particularly Yellow Pages.
  • If all else fails, Google can often provide the answers.

You'd be better off the find a local "geo-tech" engineer that's familiar the the geology and the past history of landslides in the area. When it comes to push and shove in court the local geologists has a better chance.

Yeah, but what if Podunk has no local geologists? Then you have to dredge up some regional or national honcho. Not necessarily impossible, but a little more work....

There is only one in this area and he's a total flake. I tried him a few years ago and he kept changing the plans. In fact, I filed one with the city and they got a new one in the mail from the moron.

Sounds like you want a "Better Call Saul" type of engineer.

2 reports were done by the company I hired. The first one missed the smoking gun. He got fired, or at least was "no longer there." The 2nd came to the location of the slide and withing 5 minutes said, "It's obvious what happened. You can see the trench under the pipe. The water was shooting out of the drain pipe, over the hill, like a hydrant." When the report came out, 8 mos. later, it said the drain "possibly" had an effect on the pipe breaking. Does that sound like a company with integrity?

There should have been more to it. Any photographs.

Seems you have people with work ethics that resembles a public servant mentality.

It has been my experience that third party engineers tend to favor the party who is paying them. The word "possibly" has never been in any report i have ever done. You either hit the exact or get out of the business.

That's kind of the way I was looking at it, knowing nothing about the engineering business.

There are many reputable firms offering these services on a strictly neutral basis, reporting the truth and making valid deductions for neither side.

Two are Golder Associates and Amec, both of whom I have worked with in Val d'Or, Quebec, Canada. Both are represented in the Washington area.
