Antique Gas Pumps and Credit Card Readers

01/20/2016 3:02 PM

This probably sounds like a silly question, but would it be possible to configure credit card readers to work with antique gas pumps. The readers would have to be independent of the gas pumps, but would this be possible?

ANYTHING is possible.

What is the purpose? Is this just a novelty item for your old gas pump store?

Do you want to dispense gas from these old pumps and charge for it?

The act sounds like a simple modification.

The question is how much will it cost to get it certified for use...

How antique? I'll bet it would be difficult to use a cardreader with a gravity type gasoline dispenser. As stated with enough money, anything is possible.

I've been on hiatus, but the phrase "... with enough money..." sparks the old LynDoor Industries market hunter in me.

I think the LynDoor™Industries Posi-Flow RotoMetric© digital flow meter with the virtual Digimatic™ interface could make this combination a winner!

I'll contact our "American Pickers" contractors to be on the lookout for old gas pumps.

I trust the Bahamas were nice this time of year?

Well, using the Posi-Flow RotoMetric might be a good idea. We can surreptitiously harvest the energy from the flowmeter as light, compress and save the light at the point of fuel dispense, and have the 'Pickers retrieve it when they stop and fuel up. The compressed stored light can then be used to illuminate the road for their vehicle, extending battery life. This sounds like a solid winner.

And to think, I was going top suggest using a henway.

Bahamas are a very nice distraction. Enjoyed it very much.

A henway, you say? And, please tell me, what's a henway?

Lyn asked "What's a henway?"

Oh, about five pounds.

Ah, it's good to be back!

Yeah, I'd noticed that a troll had been feeding. Has there been a lot of that going on lately?

I see more antique gas pumps on "American Restoration".

I've seen the guys from "American Pickers" bring some of their picks there for restoration.

How antique are we talking about... We have a antique pump that fills a glass container on the pump and then you dispense it to your car.

I just read doormans post

I've bought gas from this place. These are functioning fuel dispensers.

Looks like ones made by Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Co. I haven't seen any functional in a LONG time. Where are these?

OP - if this is the type of Antique Gas Pump you're talking about, you might be best suited to reach out to Gilbarco Veeder-Root at http://www.gilbarco.com/us/content/contact-us-0

Since they're still in the business of making gas pumps and might be the best source of how to integrate new tech with old equipment. And, having the OEM provide the means, less impact to value of the antique may be incurred.

Shoup, Idaho, USA, right along the River Of No Return.

It's been ten years at least since I've been up there. These pumps may no longer be in service... or even in place.

In the northern Idaho panhandle, you can take Route 200 east from Sand Point past Ponderay Lake (Anglicized spelling of Pend Oreille). If you go past the town of Hope, you are beyond Hope until you come to East Hope.

On the way, there is a yellow highway sign that says "Moose Crossing"; right after that there is a swamp on the left. Across the swamp there used to be a big plywood silhouette of Bullwinkle. That cracked me up so much that I damn near drove off the road.

In the town of Hope, there was a Czech-owned restaurant "Edelhaus" that made their own superb sausages, and somehow they had also found out about beignets, and made them, too. Memorable breakfast!
