That is difficult. I would do this when no air is being comsumed. If you can calculate the volume of all the air line downline from the compressor, that would be great, but most likely you can't for one reason or another. Empty all air lines, then close off all exit points, valves, etc. Put a shutoff at he compressor and a guage on the downline side of the shutoff. Turn on the compressor and measure the time it takes to fill all the lines to 10 bar. This should come close to telling you the volume of all the lines if you know the cfm (or equivalent SI units) output. Shut the valve at the compressor and may as well turn off the comressor at this point. Measure the pressure drop over time. With the approximated air live volume and pressure drop, you should be able to calculate the CFM lost. Using the HP of the compressor with whatever efficiency factor you decide to use, you should be able to calculate the power consumption in KW/hours or other unit of measure.

On a quiet stroll , note where you hear hissing leaks .

Also which consumer point has hissing sound with nobody drawing air.

Fix all.

Remind user operators " Air costs more than Electricity--never use a leaky nozzle/hose clamp!"

If at all possible, shut down the line and repair all leaks. Size of pipe line, type of joints, etc. etc. all would enter itno a decision of when and how to repair.

Compressed Air Leakage Loss:

Hole Size Loss/Hole Cfm

1/64" .244

1/32" .973

1/16" 3.9

1/8" 15.6

1/4" 62.3

3/8" 140.0

1/2" 249.2

3/4" 560.9

6 cft compressed air at 100 psi = 1 Kw

Check hole dia matching & multiply to come to Total Cfm lost by leaks.

Energy Lost = Total cfm x 500 HP/2800 cfm x .746 Kw/HP x 3.413 Btu x Total Hours/year

Multiply the Answer with Rate/Kwh. In Pakistan this is Rs. 5.50/Kw

Energy Saving Tips:

Compressors:

  • Optimum selection of central compressor Vs nos of small zone compressors
  • Choose compressor to highest ratio of cfm delivered to brake HP.
  • Select air intake location that provides cool, dry & clean air
  • Maintain compressor driving belts & other parts.
  • Ensure water cooling ducts not blocked.
  • Use larger/extra receivers on existing compressors.
  • Reduce air pressure to lowest feasible level.

Distribution Systems:

  • Undersized and/ or Oversized Mains.

· Receivers & After Coolers' inefficiency, Refrigrant Air Dryers

· Air Leakages,.

  • Excessive Pressure Drops.

· Wet Air.

· Absence Air Traps, Wrong Trap-type, Undersized/ Oversized Trap, Leaking Air traps

· Absence Pressure Reducing/ and Control Valves, Wrong Trap-type, Undersized/ Oversized Valves, Leaking Valves.

· Absence Flow Metering & Monitoring Systems.

· Absence in-line Strainers

· Absence Moisture Separators.Air filters

Why don't you just something about fixing the leaks? Go to the root cause first.

Apply soapy water and look for bubbles being formed. Once you've found the leak, you can decide what to do about it.
