There was some really great work done about 10 years ago, using phase conjugate mirrors and optical programming - outside of PC. It could do things like distinguish between a telephone pole and a tree.

Try searching old additions of SCI-AM, and searching on non-digital computing.

They had an interesting show on The Discovery Channel about a month ago that was similiar to what you are talking about. It was a new kind of police ID system i think being developed in the UK. I will try and find a link to it and put it in here later.

I saw this very one, and it's really, really advanced, using this relative-proportion algorithm.

What I did was, to open the main Google page, there, in the search box write "Face recognition", and hit the 'enter' key on my keyboard.

After about some five seconds, the screen was filled with many links supposedly fitting my search query, and the nine I quoted above, were the first in-line for inspection.

well done guest I was in the process of doing that very thing yesterday when I had a machine go down and had to do repairs.
