Ring Main Network

02/04/2016 6:34 AM

Fault passage indicators when installed on both incoming and out going LBS of underground cable network and a fault earth fault or phase to phase between two RMU occurs , will the fault be indicated on both incoming and out going LBS.The question arises as both the LBS will be connected to a common BUS.

If the fault has passed through the RMU to the next section both indicators will show a fault. If they don't then the fault is liable to be in the RMU.

You just have to logically follow the route from the source to the NOP.

Really love the TLAs, though it is rather thoughtless to expect the forum to use www.acronymfinder.com to fully understand what they mean.

LBS Load Balance System

RMU Ring Main Unit

TFI Transient Fault indicator

NOP Normally Open Point (breaks the ring in to two legs)

The two switches to the left are the RMU fed from the public supply. Centre and right are the customers switchgear.
Just below the operating handle on the 2nd left is the TFI relay

I think LBS-means Load Break Switch.

BUS?

Apparently MILF means "mowers I'd like to fix".

TFI's are only effective if one RMU is the NOP

Then if neither RMU were a NOP, that would be NBG.

Trace the fault's likely paths, if it travels through both then both will register it.

If you cannot visualise the problem draw it on paper, that's what I do when I want to explain something to someone who doesn't understand (such as young consultants that are adamant about one thing because that's what their simulation software says).
