Air Speed and Distance

02/16/2016 11:40 PM

would it be more aerodynamic to make the fuselage of an airplane flat on the bottom and top to be more similar to the wings shape both top and bottom and to merg together without the sharp angle at the wing to the fuselage? It might be better to draw a picture but just look at the stelth fighter jet. Way not on all the airplanes? so what's the big secred if it'll save time and money?

Planes ... Wings need lift.. The stealth bomber is pushed around in a controlled manner and takes advantage of it's power to weight ratio. A wing shaped fuselage has been designed, but they have been difficult to push around in a controlled manner. Today's technology might allow for it, but you loose the window seating that people love. Maybe for freight.

Wow! No one has ever thought of that before. No wait, they did - for a split second - and dismissed it as not viable because it violated the most basic engineering principles.

You also need to work on your literacy.

You're wrong and there is no need to attack his literacy. English may not be his first language.

Attack? If English is indeed not the APs primary language, then he/she does need to work on it.

The concept you're struggling with is called a 'lifting body'. The concept has been around since the 1950s and some vehicles have been built over the years from as early as 1962.

The US Space Shuttle made use of some of the aerodynamics learned from studies of lifting bodies.

Read more about the concept here: Lifting_body

Great idea, except if the top is flat, there's no way for the pilot to see where he's going.

He'd be looking straight up and not forward.

The top "more similar to the wing shape" That would be a bump. not flat

Symmetrical wings have been around forever on aerobatic planes and they fly quite nicely, so, nothing new here.

Look at a Pitts Special sometime.

Still, no place for the pilot to see out the front...................hey wait, they can lie down flat and use a periscope to look ahead.

True.. I think this is what the OP had in mind.

No need to lay down

Not exactly flat on the bottom either.

This is what i'm talking about. Thanks for your pics. My point is rather simple if you compare the wing on a bird. The wing has to go up and down to get thrust, and so it is hinged to the body thereby to do so. The lift of a plane being at the wings only and adding the weight in the center of the plane creates all the more tension on the wing. way not have that lift concept included with the fuselage as well.
