Mud Pump in Drilling Rig Model e-760-9

02/19/2016 11:32 PM

hello,

i am trying to find out clue for the following problem .....

our mud pump -1 with one re-winded dc motor 900 HP, 750 V, frame type 4903 BY-R was installed and put into operation. it has bee observed this motor is drawing 350 amps at 400 volts (with field current - 55 amps) , motor is also getting heated up. however if the same load is put into the mud pump-2 , it will draw only 150 amps and runs smoothly.

can anybody throw some light why the motor of mud pump-1 is getting heated up and taking high current ? we have two mud pumps (1 + 1) and each have only one motor.

Yes.

It is being run by unskilled people who are not qualified to perform troubleshooting or analysis.

Why was it rewound?

There are many more questions to be answered by you before any help can be given.

Your numbers are hard to reconcile:

900 HP x 746 W/HP = 671,400 W

671,400 W / 750 V = 895.2 A

From the other direction, 350 A x 400 V = 140,000 W.

140,000 W / (746 W/HP) ~~ 187.7 HP

And 150 A x 400 V / (746 W/HP) ~~ 80.4 HP

sir,

motor was overhauled and rewinded due to physical damage during transportation

voltage and current figures were given from the SCR panel as it is being depicted

Your figures make no sense what so ever.

When the motor is running is there excessive sparking on the brushgear? It's not unknown for a DC motor to be returned from repair with the brushgear offset to the natural commutation point.

Out of interest how can windings get damaged in transit?

Running backwards? (depends upon pump type if possible or not!)

I am guessing its a centrifugal type....which will possibly run (badly!) backwards.....

I presume it is rewinding error. Where you got it rewound? Was it by mfr. of motor or some one else. It is D.C motor it needs careful re winding or it it create such problems.

are they 2 motor MP's?

if so it's in the Active Field control tuning [GE] or electronics [Ross Hill, IPS]

if single motor check the belts etc.

Oh ya, if getting hot you may have an open SCR, assigning another SCR bay to that MP to check that. I'm still with it's two motors not doing active field control right, on your RH the Field Control Boards are in the end Field cabinet, not in the SCR or DC Modules.

I bet if you put an DC Amp meter on each DC Motor you will find a LOT more amps than showing on your SCR Bay meters, that's what getting them hot and can burn up your new 752 faster than a mis-firing SCR.

PS glad to see you're still working, lots of old jackup's stacking up in the GOM, good luck, PM me if you need to, i have all the RH prints at home, wouldn't want to see you loose a contract over this, too hard to get a new one with oil like it is now.
