Windows 8 is such a monumental POS that anything, even W 10, is seen by many as the lesser of two evils.

W7 is being killed by Microcrap and "autoloading" of W10 seems to be a coming trend for W7 users.

My son-in-law was operating W 8.1 with the alleged capability to upgrade to W10.

Several months after he started using his W 8.1, the machine did it for him, with no input on his part!

Drowning people will grasp at any shred of hope and this is all W10 is. A false promise of better times put out by the pusher man of W8 with a forced audience of users with no recourse.

W7 is abandoned. W8 is the only alternative. W8 SUCKS! Is that by design? Yes. W8 was the poison pill that allowed Bill to charge for everything from that point forward.

My son is my computer guru. He's a manager in the IT department of a large university. It's his job to know in-depth details of various versions of Windows, Apple's OS, and Linux. He has told me not to install Windows 10.

If the time ever comes when I need a new PC, or need to upgrade my Win7 laptop, he said he'd get me set up with Linux.

He also said that the GWX control panel available in this link is a legit way to keep those annoying Win 10 popups off your PC, which will help prevent an accidental loading of Win 10.

About the only totally positive things I've ever heard about W10 have come from Mircosoft. Go figure.

The thought of having a private corporation record and store everything I do, write, say and download leaves me cold.

We bank and pay our bills electronically. The thought that some prick/s from MS know everything there is to know about me is cause enough for me to never download it.

Thanks for the warning. I have been resisting downloading it so far - thank heavens. I am becoming increasingly worried, perhaps paranoiac, about the way the internet is going. The UN have unveiled their masterplan for the next 14 years - saying that they wish to implement global socialism and corporate fascism as part of their "Agenda 2030" plans.

Part of their plans, officially dubbed "Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals," aims to reduce inequality worldwide by forcing individual governments and citizens alike to share their wealth under the guidance of a one world government.

No doubt their agenda will be achieved as the slack A*** public have the info and just don't believe much and are happy in there cocoons. Conspiracies tend to have much truth as the basis. As they say on StarTrek; 'One man can do for the greater good of manking'.

This will not happen.

That's pretty much the problem I am having - not able to update Windows 7 since about 12 April. I had no intention of upgrading to Windows 10 at this point. My updates have always been set to automatic.

I have also read where the issue may be traffic related but am finding this hard to swallow unless they deliberately cut the bandwidth to Windows 7 updates.

SE - thanks for the link. Am running the troubleshooter as I write but having spent a few hours already on the MS and other blogs with no apparent results I am not sure if the problem is resolvable or not.

Generally speaking I have read a lot of comments in this forum on the experiences with Win 10 and my posture is that I am, or at least perhaps was, not in any hurry to change operating systems on my personal laptop. But if I can't get regular security updates then I am not going to be happy about it.

... and just in - the troubleshooter has wiped the Update log to 'never' been updated. Similar result that I got with another MS troubleshooter. Why can't they put them all in the same #$%^& place???

Sigh....

I have a slow system, and it doesn't take "hours" to do updates; actually I should say "didn't" because I'm now using Win 10. Updating before I switched was as simple as removing the check from the Win 10 upgrade so it wouldn't do it until I was ready.

I wouldn't jump into new a Apple too hastily - they are morphing into a Microsoft clone by the minute.

I have an 11 year old emac that runs like a Swiss watch, it always has and it always does exactly what it said on the box, i.e., "Here's how you operate your new eMac, take it out the box, plug it in and you're ready to roll."

I also have a new generation mac, the one with the Intel chip that allows Microcrap OS to be loaded and although I've never put any MS crap on there the slew of problems I have with that version are too numerous to relate here but because I operate the 11 year old emac and the 2 year old mac side by side I can assure you that Apple have seriously gone downhill from their glory days when they really were looking out for the user - now they're just looking out for their stock price and "**ck the user".

I can report that after leaving my laptop on overnight and the following day that it did in fact pick up the Win7 updates around 1:30 AM Los Angeles time. A far cry from days gone past.

Some of the tangential conversations regarding John Deere etc are interesting as well. As an extension to that: technically I can buy a light switch at the local hardware shop but it can only be installed in my home by a certified electrician here in Australia. I wonder how much longer before I can't change a light bulb legally?
