Stock Aluminum Boxes wanted

08/02/2007 11:54 PM

Hey guys.. We have designed a new light dimmer for our industry, and just wondered if anyone knew where we could get some stock extruded aluminum boxes at.

I know that many extruders would love to make us a new mould, but our budget is strained as it is.. I know that many companys have moulds lying around that are abandoned, or set aside for newer models, etc.

What I looking for is something like is used in the larger dc/ac inverters, like this one:

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Don

Don, My understanding is that many extruders have some of their own extrusion dies and also may have dies that were abandoned by customers. Extruders usually hang on to the dies between runs. You didn't say much about the size of the "box" you need or the order quantity. The smallest amount that extruders will usually push is one billet. The yield, of course, depends on the amount of aluminum exiting the die and the size of the billet. Maybe you can find an extruder that has a few lengths of suitable extruded material that you can purchase and then go from there. When I was designing aluminum extrusions, the smallest amount I could get Reynolds to push from any one die was 40,000 pounds. Sorry I can't offer more.......

IF you have more detailed specs I might see some laying around. (work with mobile electronic manufacturing), board size, dissipation, mounting number of units etc.

Thanks Guys, I will have all that info soon, I guess I was just fishing for sources to keep it "Made in the USA" without paying a fortune as this product has stiff competition, and I also wanted to be able to add the NEW master controller for the multi wattage ballast-less CCFL lamps we are soon to promote..

One of the best manufacturers of boxes I have heard about from my fellow hams is Budd Boxes. I know Mouser carries them, and maybe DigiKey does too. You could Google them to find out how to contact the company directly.
