Audi 5000-016 Transaxles

05/20/2016 10:19 AM

Familiar with the Audi 5000-016 transaxles? I'm thinking of using it in a mid-engine car. I believe there were manual and automatic versions, but need some idea of how strong it is, where to find one, problems, what $$$. Any info, experiences, sources, etc appreciated.

How much horsepower are you planning? You also need to look at the torque limitations of the Audi transaxle. You might look at some of the VW transporter axles, they have a lot of upgrades available for them as a lot of VW fans like to use them for drag racing. they even have a billet case set up for some really high horsepower with HD axles that will handle extreme HP. I saw a trans set up that was mated to a Winters Quick change at PRI last year six speed for independent rear suspension. I can't remember the name of the company but I did get their literature or card as I was thinking of using in my Mark VII land speed car. But if my memory serves me correctly it was real close to the horsepower limits of their design, also it did not need a clutch to shift it only to engage it on start. My set up is just over 1400 HP, I will look for the card or literature later this afternoon and see what I can find for you. Also the package size of this trans set up was incredible small for its capabilities. About 18'' long and 12''x 12'' maybe slightly smaller width and height wise since it has been a little while since I saw it. Also it was cable shifted, which makes it incredibly easy to package a drive train for mid engine setups. Well I need to get to work for a little while as I need to pay the bills since I did not marry a rich woman whom could take care of me in the life of luxury I wanted so I need to make up the difference.

Great links, and I had not heard of GT40.com, which is a great place for guys building their own car. I'm still trying to resolve if there is an automatic version of the Audi 5000-016, or just the manual, and how many gears it has. KEP hints at an automatic version when describing their adapter for the Gen I SBC.

Duke, this would be a mild cruiser with a warmed-over SBC, so I'm not too worried about strength. Price, availability and length are important, and, if you haven't guessed, I'm leaning toward an automatic, ideally with manual shift option. I had thought of a Porsche Tiptronic, but it apparently is not happy outside of it's original use.

There were quite a few transporter transaxles that were automatic which I do believe were also derivatives of the Audi transaxle might be cheaper and more plentiful. Plus there are a lot of adapters for them to put V8 engines in front of them with a reverser in between the trans and engine. Or you can turn the engine backwards with a reverse rotation camshaft and firing order. You may also have that same problem with the Audi 5000 trans as well you need to check on rotation of the engines of both trans and engine to see if they are compatable. But like I said it is easily remedied with a reverse rotation camshaft.

Great link to Jim Ellis Audi. It appears the 5000 was made in a 3spd auto and a 5spd manual. I'm gonna call them and pick their brains.
