Android Browser That /Doesn't/ Search From Address Bar

06/08/2016 10:05 AM

Hi,

Slightly at my wits end trying to find a geek-compatible mobile browser. I want one that /doesn't/ search from the address bar. It's the address bar. It's for addresses, not searching. I don't want it to search for www.domainname.suffix I want it to go there and (importantly) to give me an error message if it can't.

Opera tell me it can't be done in the Android browser. In Android Chrome the option to add a new search engine (which allows you to turn it off in the desktop version by adding a "null" search engine) is missing. I used config: in Firefox to turn off keyword searching.... but it still searches from the address bar. Even Dolphin, a lovely little browser for avoiding compulsory mobile sites has no facility to turn off address bar search, will insist on hiding error messages and giving me pages of "did you mean....?" results. No. I didn't mean that. I meant what I said. Now please tell me why you won't go there.

OK. I feel a little better now. Does anyone know /any/ mobile browser that either doesn't search from the address bar or enables you to turn it off?

Thanks!

"Tools, Options, Programs, Manage add-ons, Search Providers

Select/highlight your Search Provider enable/disable "Search in the address bar""

I have this symbol on my main screen. I go directly to Chrome when I touch it.

Just remembered this.

I can speak to my phone and it will automatically search and display whatever I'm looking for.

Not everyone out there is as advanced Mr. Silly Billy Lyn.

Don't just hate it when you are searching for transmissions, and it comes back Warning! This site contains material unsuitable for members of your age group! I know I do.

OR when you are looking up research reports on some exotic new chemistry, and it comes back with something about a test kit to mail in for that? Or that if you click here, you get to purchase 27 tons of it from a vendor in China on Alibaba?

I tried speaking into the cell phone while texting once. I came out really bad due to my West Texas drawl.

Your phone should have a voice recognition feature so that it can be taught to understand that West Texas English that you'll speak there.

It does, I just got tired of spell checker on that part, still converting words I want to use into words it wants to use.

Mine still has that goofy looking bird that comes out over the sundial part of my phone, and chisels out the text message in sandstone.

Another thing I don't need on my phone is a reply all button on emails. I did this by accident in referring to a map printed over a pair recently, wherein I stated I always preferred the South Pacific to the Indian Oceans. I got lambasted for emailing trash by the wife of one of my LENR buddies (I guess she was reading his emails.) I apologized, but still felt like I needed a bath after that tongue lashing.

It took me a long time to embrace the voice feature, but I find it very useful when driving.

Now my wife just bought a smart watch for me, since she and one of the boys have them and like them.

I haven't figured out how to connect it to my phone yet though.

Think of two adjacent hemispheres. Does that help you. There could be additional concentric (more or less perky) zones.

Whoa Lyn - careful - that's a Texan you're talking to - the language they speak is Texan, not West Texan English. I lived there for most of a year and I know Texans think they are a separate country residing inside the USA.

You (shudder) mean to tell me we are not a separate country already?

Where is Sam Houston when you need him, or Andy Jackson for that matter?

As to the language, mine sounds like a choo-choo train full of drunk sailors on shore leave. A smoke belching, huffing, puffing string of four letter words, punctuated with "ya'll", and "quit it", and "shut up barkin". The only people I spend much time talking to are my dogs. They understand all regulated cuss words, in English, and in Spanish. German ones, not so much.

I have heard the King's English here also (mostly ranchers that migrated here from Old Merry), and yes, they are a rare breed. The teachers in our rather high class school taught correctly pronounced English, but no one I knew could say it the way the teacher did. These days, there is a lot less twang, and more TV English.

I can speak your national language - almost. Had to to survive in the oil patch (oil field). Unfortunately, I never could drop my Pa. Dutch slang and incorrect grammar, and even with a drawl, that just doesn't work with you folks. You know that you still have folks there that think it is 1862? At least you did in the latter 1980's. Yankee is a 4 letter word to them. Fortunately, I was tutored by a lengthy stay in W.Va., where they come close to speaking Texan, but not quite as distinctive and colorful.

I have to be careful when I talk to someone from down your way on a phone call, because I lapse back into the drawl. I'm always afraid they'll think I'm a Yankee trying to mock them.

If you've got the need to be that 'geeky' then include the protocol in what you put into the address bar. By only entering the *incomplete* name of the host "www.domainname.suffix" you are asking the browser to do some of the work for you. If you enter the FQDN "http://www.domainname.suffix/" then your complaint about the browser being insufficiently 'geeky' would be significantly more justifiable.

You don't need a search engine for that you just highlight the web address right click on it and click on "go to"....
