What Would You Use and Why

06/27/2016 11:40 AM

I have a machine that need a new motor the choices are

230 to 180 Volt DC with a small ac/dc drive

230 to 90 Volt DC with a small ac/dc drive

115 to 90 Volt DC with a small ac/dc drive

Would I get better torque with a motor of higher voltage

Frame size and ratings of the motor are the same

Thanks

Torque is related to kilowatt/horsepower rating and RPM's. Input power source is not relevant.

If you need more torque get a motor with a similar RPM rating but higher kilowatt/horsepower rating.

Obviously the ratings can't all be the same if the voltages differ. So which are the same and which are not? (Among rpm, hp, volts, amps, output torque...)

I'm pretty sure he means the frame size and related mechanical ratings.

Correct the mechanical size (frame) and H/P 1/2

Such as hp and torque, which were mentioned?

"Frame size and ratings of the motor are the same"

Well, as a person who works around electric motors all the time, if a person walked up to me and said they needed a replacement motor of the same frame size and ratings as the one they have now but in a different voltage I would have no trouble understanding what they are talking about.

Also if they said they would prefer one with a higher torque I would also be able to easily deduce that they need a motor of a compatible frame and or mounting configuration that has a similar RPM rating but is of a higher power rating or service factor.

Basic and easily understood motor speak in my views.

It seems that you don't explain very well what you mean by "better torque". Torque is a rotational force that has a signed numerical magnitude. No magnitude is better than any other.

A larger torque magnitude will accelerate faster than a smaller magnitude. Which is better? A larger torque magnitude can damage equipment easier than a smaller magnitude. Which is better?

Every electric motor produces back EMF when spinning. In a DC motor this back EMF reduces the current magnitude. Depending on how the stator and rotor windings are wired (series, parallel or separately powered) the torque is proportional to the current or the current squared. That is until a core saturates or winding insulation breaks down. In every case the torque produced will decrease with rotational velocity. How does this fit into the determination of "better torque"?

Bottom line though, if the POWER RATINGS AND SPEED ARE THE SAME in all three versions, there is NO DIFFERENCE in terms of the torque involved. I actually doubt that all aspects are equal between these, but you didn't provide enough information here. From what you did provide however the answer would be another question anyway:

"What supply voltage is available to you?"

Because if you only have 115VAC available, no point in considering either of the 230V options. If 230V is available to you, then comparatively, the 180V unit and motor will be smaller, thus less expensive.

<...Would I get better torque with a motor of higher voltage...> Nonsense. Torque is what the machine presents to the motor, not the other way round.

Get a 1-for-1 replacement part from the manufacturer!

That Wonder Woman picture is circa 1978, but the actress Lynda carter is still one handsome woman.

I'm assuming by your name that your in the printing business. You haven''t specified the horse power nor the frame type.

I have a used Star-Kimble (Miehle printing) 3hp 208/416v 3ph 1725rpm motor with KVA code "J". I also have the motor start controler, It's from a Miehle V50 printing press. If you can use it, your more than welcome to it, for cheap cheap. You can PM me if interested. Dan

I will print this out for you.

Do as Fredski said.

Unless you plan to build your own motor, I assume you will purchase it from someone. Call them if you have a vendor in mind.

If not call three vendors, tell them what you need and let them spec. it and price it for you.

If the forum gives you bad advice.............................................................tough.

If a supplier gives you bad advice, at least you will have some recourse.

Do motor suppliers print their own literature?

Call, today. You print, they sell motors.
